This hurricane season is poised to swamp parts of both coasts of Florida, and by doing so, point out the high cost of rampant, under-insured development.
Even before Tropical Storm Nicole brings high winds and flooding to the east coast this week, Southwest Florida is still drying out after the ravages of Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm that hit in late September.

State of play: Coastal flooding, tropical storm force winds and heavy rains were buffeting much of the state of Florida, with flooding and gusty winds also in Georgia and coastal South Carolina.
A dozen Daytona Beach condos, hotels at risk of collapsing ahead of Hurricane Nicole landfall
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - Volusia County deputies went door to door Wednesday urging Daytona Beach residents to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Nicole's landfall in Florida, which happened on Thursday morning. The system has since weakened back to a tropical storm.
Deputies said 12 structures are at risk of collapsing after Hurricane Ian left many buildings vulnerable after it ravaged Central Florida.
