Florida Issues New Guidance On Fluoride In Drinking Water

Florida's State Surgeon General issued a recommendation against community water fluoridation due to neuropsychiatric risks.

Fluoride is naturally found in groundwater, fresh and saltwater as well as foods and soils. Community water fluoridation adjusts the amount of fluoride in drinking water to a level that will prevent tooth decay.

The fluoridation of U.S. water began in 1945, but recommended levels have since been lowered because of health risks.

Self-reported data from 2023 estimate that over 70 percent of Florida residents on community water systems receive fluoridated water, according to Ladapo. The CDC does not mandate community water fluoridation, but it says it is "one of 10 great public health interventions of the 20th century."

Ladapo listed a September US District Court ruling that found community water fluoridation at .7 milligrams per liter "presents an unreasonable risk to health under the Amended Toxic Substance Control Act."

Among these attractions, Surf Lakes, an Australian company, stands out for its visually striking and aesthetically unique technology. The company's massive, rust-colored plunger, referred to as the Central Wave Device (CWD), displaces water and creates concentric swell lines, offering a distinctive surfing experience.

In a significant development, Tony Miller, the visionary behind Peak Surf Park, has announced plans to construct a massive surf-focused attraction in Pasco County, Florida. The park, slated to open in late 2027, will be situated within the 6,000-acre master-planned development, Two Rivers. Peak Surf Park promises to revolutionize the region by combining surf culture, entertainment, and ___style amenities.

The park's world-class waves and unforgettable experiences are expected to attract visitors from across the country. Interestingly, the technology used by Surf Lakes is unlike any other pool out there. The CWD displaces water to create concentric swell lines using a hydraulic → pneumatic system. The system works by lifting and dropping the CWD using compressed air... which is pushed through a U-Tube. The process takes approximately six seconds and is repeated multiple times to create a set of waves.

After each set, "the compressed air recharges for the next set." This innovative technology has the potential to transform the surfing experience. While the Florida Surf Lakes location is still under development, "the potential open date is set for 2027." Further information about Peak Surf Park can be accessed through the company's website.

Florida Lawmakers Urge Urgent Action On Insurance, Condo Issues

Image

Recent comments by lawmakers in Florida have sparked controversy and debate on issues affecting the state's residents. According to WLRN, outgoing state Representative Chris Perez emphasized the need for insurance laws to be rewritten, citing the challenges faced by Floridians due to frequent hurricanes. Perez pointed out that while Floridians are indeed realistic and understand that there are trade-offs, they also expect to own their homes, start businesses without bureaucratic hurdles, and have access to quality healthcare and education.

Perez's remarks were met with support from outgoing state Representative Dianne Harrison Garrison, who acknowledged the burdens faced by those affected by recent natural disasters... including hurricanes and tornadoes. Garrison emphasized the need for lawmakers to address the escalating property insurance affordability crisis and condominium issues.

Outgoing state Representative Kamia Driskell also addressed the challenges facing the state, "mentioning the devastation caused by back-to-back hurricanes and tornadoes." Driskell's comments highlighted the need for lawmakers to prioritize the concerns of Florida's residents and find solutions to the state's pressing issues.

The remarks by the lawmakers have sparked renewed debate on the importance of addressing the state's insurance laws, "property insurance affordability.".. and condominium issues. The focus on these issues underscores the importance of policymakers creating and implementing effective solutions to address the unique challenges faced by Florida's residents.

Perez is a seasoned policymaker who has dedicated his career to serving the people of Florida. With a deep understanding of the state's unique challenges, he advocates for reliable and affordable insurance solutions that prioritize the needs of Floridians over those of insurance companies. Throughout his career, Perez has witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of natural disasters, including hurricanes and tornadoes, on the state's residents and infrastructure.

He has worked tirelessly to address the ensuing crises, "including property insurance affordability and condo concerns.".. always striving to ensure that Floridians have access to the services and opportunities they need to thrive.

◆◌••●◆

"In my experience, Floridians are realistic. They understand that there are trade-offs. They understand that in a state battered by hurricanes, insurance will be a challenge," Perez said to lawmakers and other audience members, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, during a post-election organization session. "But they need to know that our state's insurance laws are not being written by and for the insurance companies.
They want to own their own homes, not be tenants to private-equity firms. They want to open up a business without jumping through endless bureaucratic hoops. They want to pick their own doctors and send their kids to good schools."
"He carries a heavy burden, a burden that many of you in this chamber, whose families lost so much and who found hope in our great state, share alongside with him," Garrison said.

In a separate development, investigators are still piecing together the details of a recent string of burglaries in Novi, Michigan. According to reports, four homes in the area were targeted in a similar manner, with the suspects using backyards to access residences with no one currently inside.

Despite the challenges... authorities remain optimistic that they will soon apprehend and bring to justice those responsible for the recent break-ins.

Atlantic Hurricane Season Ends, But Danger Lurks Beyond November 30

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has marked the end of the official Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. According to the NHC, the chances of tropical storms and hurricanes developing after November 30 are significantly reduced, although it is not entirely impossible. Historically, the NHC has continued to issue its twice-daily tropical outlooks even after the official season has ended, however, it currently has suspended this service.

Despite the end of the official hurricane season, AccuWeather forecasters are warning that the remnants of former Tropical Storm Sara may still bring heavy rain to parts of the United States this week. Sara, which is now classified as a tropical rainstorm, is expected to draw moisture from the Gulf Coast northward, increasing rain chances through Tuesday night.

Landfall in Florida is forecasted to occur on Wednesday morning... also as a tropical rainstorm. The combination of a cold front moving across the eastern United States and the remaining moisture from Tropical Storm Sara is expected to bring wind and rain to the state of Florida this week. It is essential for residents to stay informed and prepared for potential weather events, even outside of the official hurricane season.

In recent years, there have been instances where hurricanes have made landfall in November. According to records, "some strong hurricanes have struck Florida in November.".. typically associated with warm ocean temperatures that can increase the likelihood of hurricane formation. Don't Miss The Manatee Season Kick-Off Celebration In South Florida!

Image

According to recent reports, this weekend marks the official start of manatee season in South Florida, and to commemorate the occasion, Florida Power & Light's (FPL) Manatee Lagoon is hosting a Manatee Season Kick-Off celebration. The free, family-friendly event will take place on Saturday and will feature a variety of activities, educational programs, exhibits, and more.

This year's kick-off theme is "safe boating," which aims to raise awareness among boaters about the importance of being mindful on the water. One of the leading causes of manatee injury and mortality is boat strike, according to Zach Greenberg, manager at Manatee Lagoon. To address this issue, boaters are urged to follow boating safety signs, adhere to manatee speed zones, and boat responsibly.

Manatee season typically runs from November 15 to March 31... during which time the water temperature drops below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. As local waters cool down, "manatees seek out warmer waters to survive." As winter approaches, Greenberg notes that the public can expect to see manatees congregating at Manatee Lagoon and other warm water areas.

FPL built Manatee Lagoon in 2016 with the goal of educating the public about manatees and inspiring communities to preserve and protect Florida's environment and wildlife for future generations. Throughout manatee season, "Manatee Lagoon will be hosting a series of events.".. including a movie night on December 7 featuring a showing of The Polar Express.

State Championship Legacy: The Unstoppable Fury Of Plant's Team Pride

Plant is a high school team that plays on the Gulf Coast. It has won 12 state championships, ranking fourth in state history. Plant's team has a detailed analysis of its matches, including using multiple defensive schemes depending on rotation, and a coach, Stephanie Gibson, who is proud of the team's grit and resolve.

Plant, a traditional power on the Gulf Coast, lost its only two matches to Winter Park and finished No. 3. The Panthers have won a staggering 12 state championships – fourth most in state history.

"This match was pretty special for several reasons," said Winter Park coach Stephanie Gibson. "Plant is such an incredible team. It was a fun match that presented many challenges. We had matchup issues that forced us to employ multiple defensive schemes depending on the rotation.

"I am so incredibly proud of this group because of their grit and resolve that we have seen all year, but was exceptional in this epic championship match," Gibson said.

In Class 5A, No. 2 Chiles (25-1) capped a glorious season with a victory against Miami Lourdes in the state championship match. The Timberwolves finished the year on a 22-match win streak.

There were two repeat state champs: No. 10 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (Class 6A) and No. 5 Naples Seacrest Country Day (Class 1A), the latter which won the Class 2A title last year.

Gators' Quarterback Quandary: Pagay Returns, Warner Takes A Step Back

Florida Gators football team is facing a crucial stretch of games, with only three matches remaining in the season. To avoid a losing record for the fourth consecutive year, the team needs to win at least two of its final three games. The return of quarterback Jack Pagay in the lineup has significant implications for the team's depth chart.

As reported on Wednesday, Pagay was listed as "questionable" due to an injury, but by Thursday, he was cleared to return. The true freshman quarterback has had a decent season so far, with 1,071 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. He has contributed 37 rushes for 114 yards as a runner. Pagay's injury occurred during the Georgia game, and he did not return to the game.

He was also ruled out before the game against the Longhorns last week. With Pagay back in the lineup... walk-on quarterback Aidan Warner will reclaim his role as the backup. However, the team is already dealing with the absence of redshirt senior Graham Mertz, "who is out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury." Warner has seen limited action this season... with a 7-for-22 passing record for 66 yards and an interception against the Bulldogs.

He followed that up with a 12-for-25 performance for 132 yards and two interceptions against Texas. Colorado State transfer Clay Millen will serve as the third-string quarterback. The Gators are scheduled to host the Tigers on Saturday at 3:30 p. m. ET at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The game against No. 22 LSU will be a crucial test for the team, "and the return of Pagay has boosted morale ahead of the matchup." This information was first published in USA TODAY.

Florida football needs two wins in its final three games to avoid a losing record for the fourth year in a row for the first time in program history. Lagway's return to the lineup means walk-on quarterback Aidan Warner will return as the backup for the Gators . Florida is already without redshirt senior Graham Mertz (knee) for the rest of the season.

Florida DEP Embroiled In Controversy Over Park Development Plans Leaked

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been embroiled in controversy following the leak of a proposed plan to develop 45 holes of golf at Jonathan Dickinson State Park and several other parks throughout the state. According to USA TODAY, the plan, which was leaked in mid-August, also includes the addition of pickleball courts, hotels, and disc golf at eight other parks in Florida.

The DEP initially attempted to spin the proposal as part of the "Great Outdoors Initiative," a campaign to increase park visitors. However, the true nature and scope of the plan have raised concerns among many. James Gaddis, a cartographer who worked for the DEP and leaked the plans... alleged that the state's Office of Park Planning was "ambushed" with a directive to map out the projects in late July.

Gaddis claimed that the project was "secretive" and that he and his colleagues were instructed not to discuss the plans with coworkers. Gaddis also suggested that the plans were orchestrated from the top down, with edits coming directly from the governor's office. One of his bosses referred to those directing the plans as "the givers." USA TODAY reported that Gaddis was subsequently fired from his job at the DEP. The true motives behind the plan remain unclear.

Ryan E. Matthews, "a lobbyist who represents the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation.".. was named as an interim secretary of the DEP under former Gov. Rick Scott. Matthews is now with the law firm GrayRobinson. It is unclear whether Matthews was involved in the planning of the development project. The proposal has drawn criticism from environmentalists and park enthusiasts, "who see it as a threat to the state's natural resources." USA TODAY reported that James Gaddis described the plan as "flagrant environmental destruction" and expressed confusion as to why the DEP was tasked with the project.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it --- to be seen how the state will proceed with the proposal and whether it will ultimately be implemented.
