Polk County Commissioners Cast Surprising Vote On Irritated Election Claims

Image

In a surprising move, the Polk County commissioners recently agreed to a resolution claiming that Florida's 2020 election process was marred by irregularities. The resolution, presented by a local group of conservative activists, collected a 3-2 vote in favor, with Commissioners George Lindsey and Martha Santiago dissenting (USA TODAY). The resolution, submitted by United Sovereign Americans, was not advertised in advance of the meeting nor listed on the agenda.

Instead, it was presented during public comment in three-minute readings by the national group's Polk County volunteers, including the president and other members of the Winter Haven 9-12 club. The group, founded in New York by 2020 election deniers, has spread to other Florida counties, including Lee and Palm Beach (USA TODAY). Commissioners Neil Combee, Rick Wilson, and Chairman Bill Braswell voted in favor of the resolution... while Lindsey and Santiago opposed it. Combee, who was recently elected as the county's property appraiser, requested the vote be taken, "and Wilson seconded the motion." During the discussion, "Lindsey expressed concern about the resolution.".. stating that he was not aware of the representation mentioned in the document and did not want to sign it without reviewing it further.

He requested the opportunity to review the resolution and possibly come back with a revised version. The move has raised questions about the powers of elected boards to respond to public comments and whether the vote was taken in a way that was transparent and open to public scrutiny. The resolution has also drawn attention to the growing trend of election denialism in Florida and elsewhere.

The resolution from United Sovereign Americans was not advertised in advance of the meeting nor listed on the Sept. 3 agenda. It was delivered during public comment in three-minute-long readings of the resolution by the national group's Polk County volunteers, including the president and other members of the Winter Haven 9-12 club.

Quarterback Conundrum: A Tale Of Two Gators' Futures Hangs

The University of Florida's football program is faced with a conundrum, as head coach Billy Napier is still undecided on who will be the starting quarterback for the Gators in their upcoming game against Texas A&M. The uncertainty stems from the impressive performance of true freshman DJ Lagway, who has generated buzz after his impressive showing in the preseason.

Lagway's breakout game against Samford has led many to wonder if he should be the permanent starter over returning quarterback Graham Mertz. Mertz, who had transferred to Florida ahead of the 2023 season, had a solid but unremarkable first year as a starter. He finished with a 5-5 record and struggled in his first game of the 2024 season, completing only 11 of 20 pass attempts for 90 yards and an interception.

In contrast, Lagway has shown flashes of brilliance... leading many to speculate that he could be the better option moving forward. However, "Napier --- non-committal on the decision," stating that "time will tell" when asked about the quarterback situation. The uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position is likely a result of the strong competition between Mertz and Lagway.

Mertz had been expected to be the starter, "but Lagway's impressive performance has given the decision a fresh perspective." Despite Lagway's impressive showing against Samford... it is clear that Napier is torn between the two options. The debate surrounding the quarterback position will likely continue until Napier makes a decision.

Meanwhile, fans of the Florida Gators will have to wait and see who will emerge as the starter for the team's upcoming game against Texas A&M. This information was first published in "ClutchPoints | Florida Football News".

It was the legend John Madden who once wisely declared, "If you have two quarterbacks, you have none," and history has taught us that one of the game's greatest ambassadors is correct more often than not. However, folks in Gainesville are hoping that their Florida Gators are the exception to this long-held football rule, because head coach Billy Napier seems to be conflicted on whether returning starter Graham Mertz or true freshman phenom DJ Lagway will be QB1 for the Gators moving forward.
"Marty Smith shared on ESPN that he asked Billy Napier who will start Saturday against Texas A⁘M: 'Time will tell.'"

Florida's Winter Holiday Travel Demand Breaks Records Amid Busy Season

A recent survey by AAA, the auto and travel association, has revealed that a significant proportion of Floridians are planning to take an overnight vacation during the winter holidays, with nearly two-thirds of respondents intending to do so between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. This figure is the highest among the 13 U. S. states assessed by AAA, indicating a strong demand for winter holiday travel in the state.

According to Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA - The Auto Club Group, travelers who want to have a range of options for their holiday plans should book their trips before October. This can help ensure that they secure the itinerary they want at a competitive price. The survey found that 61% of Floridians plan to start booking their trips by the end of September... with over one-third (36%) having already done so before September.

The survey also revealed that more Floridians plan to travel during Thanksgiving and Christmas compared to New Year's. For Thanksgiving, 70% of travelers plan to take an overnight trip, with 57% having finalized their plans by the end of September. AAA recommends considering travel on the Sunday or Monday before Thanksgiving and Saturday after the holiday to avoid busy airport lines and flights with limited availability.

Whistleblower Exposes Alleged Environmental Destruction Plans For Florida State Parks

Image

The controversy surrounding the Florida State Parks plans has taken a dramatic turn with the emergence of a whistleblower who claims to have leaked confidential documents to the media. According to an article published in Yahoo News, James Gaddis, a cartographer who worked with the state's Office of Park Planning, has come forward to expose what he alleges are plans to devastate environmentally critical habitats in the state's parks. Gaddis, who was employed by the Office of Park Planning for over two years, reportedly grew concerned about the "rushed secrecy" surrounding the park plans and discovered that they would result in significant environmental destruction.

In an interview with the media, Gaddis described the proposals as "the absolute flagrant disregard for the critical, globally imperiled habitat in these parks." Specifically... Gaddis lamented the plans for a golf course at Jonathan Dickinson State Park near Jupiter Inlet and a 350-room hotel at Anastasia State Park in Saint Augustine, both on Florida's East Coast.

He accused the Governor's office, led by Governor Ron DeSantis, of issuing hushed orders to push the proposals through without public input. Gaddis claimed that his senior colleagues directed him to hurry up with his mapping so that the plans could be put into bills and passed without public scrutiny. Florida Vacation Costs: Affordable Options And Luxury Destination Rankings Revealed

Image

According to a recent analysis conducted by FloridaRentals. com, a popular vacation rental marketplace, a vacation in Florida can be an affordable indulgence. To determine the most and least expensive spots in the state, the company reviewed 25 of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida. The analysis considered various factors such as the average cost of accommodations, transportation, meals, and drinks, providing a comprehensive view of the costs associated with a vacation in each location (via data from Kayak). The study found that some destinations in Florida offer remarkable value for money.

For instance, Fort Lauderdale ranked as the most economical spot in the state, with an average total cost of $242 per day. This estimate includes the average cost of a double-occupancy accommodation, which was $144 per night... as well as the average daily spend on transportation ($13), meals ($25), and drinks ($10). According to the analysis, Fort Lauderdale's affordability is attributed to its relatively low accommodation prices compared to other popular tourist destinations.

But then, destinations like Key West were found to be relatively more expensive, with an average total cost of $381 per day. This is largely due to the high cost of accommodations, which averaged $216 per night... as well as higher prices for meals and drinks. Key West's remote location and limited dining options may contribute to its higher costs.

FloridaRentals. com's analysis provides valuable insights for travelers planning a vacation in Florida, "enabling them to make informed decisions about their destinations and budgeting." The study serves as a reliable source for this article, providing a comprehensive and data-driven perspective on the costs associated with a vacation in Florida.

Here's the best part about a vacation in Florida : it doesn't have to break the bank. Yes, really, we promise. But you don't have to just take our word for it. In August, vacation rental marketplace FloridaRentals.com released its analysis of the most and least expensive spots in the state for a vacation, highlighting a few spectacular destinations where your dollar can stretch a bit further.
To find which Floridian spots are the most economical, the team reviewed 25 of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. It looked at the average cost of a double-occupancy accommodation for all budgets (via data from Kayak), along with the average price of local transport for a day (including taxis, buses, and subways), and dug deep into the average spend on meals (calculated based on all budget restaurants for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners). The team also calculated the average cost of alcoholic drinks bought in a day and then calculated the total cost for each destination and ranked from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Gators Thrash Bulldogs In Dominant 45-7 Victory, Lagway Debuts

The Florida Gators football team demonstrated significant improvement in the second half, overcoming a close halftime score to defeat the Samford Bulldogs 45-7 in front of an announced 89,295 spectators at The Swamp. Coach Billy Napier expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that it represented "a good step in the right direction" for the team.

However, he also emphasized that there were still areas that required attention and improvement, particularly in the red zone. True freshman quarterback Jarrett Lagway made a significant impact, setting a University of Florida record with 456 passing yards and accounting for three touchdowns. He also displayed resilience, remaining in the game despite taking a hard hit to the head and shoulder area late in the second quarter.

Lagway's performance was notable, and Coach Napier praised him for his competitiveness and poise... stating that he will be a key component of the team's plans going forward (Gainesville Sun). Florida's running game was not as successful, however, with the team failing to capitalize on two red zone opportunities. On one occasion, running back Treyaun Webb was stopped on a 4th-and-1 play, while freshman Jadan Baugh fumbled the ball out of the end zone in the second quarter.

Despite these setbacks, Florida managed to score 24 points in six red zone trips, "ultimately emerging victorious." The win marks an improvement for the Gators... who had struggled in their opening game against the Utah State Aggies. While Coach Napier acknowledged that the Samford Bulldogs were not a stiff challenge, "he emphasized that the team will face sterner tests in the future." As the Gators look to build on this performance, they will likely continue to focus on refining their red zone strategy and capitalizing on scoring opportunities (Gainesville Sun).

Florida football generated enough big plays to pull away in the second half and beat Samford 45-7 before an announced 89,295 at The Swamp. The Florida Gators (1-1) led the FCS opponent Bulldogs just 14-0 at halftime and 21-7 in the third quarter before scoring 24 unanswered points to close out the game.

Florida's State Parks Under Siege: Golf Courses And Whatnot

Image

The controversy surrounding the proposed developments in Florida's state parks continues to unfold. On August 28, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was putting the so-called "Great Outdoors Initiative" on hold. This effort, which had been met with widespread criticism, aimed to install golf courses, 350-room hotels, and pickleball courts in certain state parks (Orlando Sentinel). According to a state DEP whistleblower, the plans were leaked, revealing the extent of the proposed developments.

The whistleblower was subsequently fired by the department. Meanwhile... a lawyer for golf legend Jack Nicklaus revealed that both Nicklaus and Tiger Woods were involved in designing a plan to build three golf courses in Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Martin County. The attorney stressed that the non-profit Folds of Honor was driving the project, with Nicklaus and Woods serving as course designers.

Governor DeSantis distanced himself from the plan, claiming he had not seen the proposal and characterized it as "half-baked" and "not ready for prime time" (Orlando Sentinel). However, "many have questioned whether the DEP truly acted independently," "despite DeSantis' protestations." The revelation that high-profile golfers like Nicklaus and Woods were involved in the plan has sparked further outrage... with critics claiming that the governor's administration prioritizes donor interests over the state's environmental and recreational resources.

As the situation continues to unfold, observers are left wondering what exactly did occur behind the scenes and what the future holds for Florida's state parks.
