The Bias Black Women Attorneys Face In The Legal Profession

As published in WLRN:

In a profession where expertise is paramount, bias and exclusion persist. Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes, the first Black woman to lead the Florida Bar, recounted a telling incident: upon entering a courtroom, the judge delayed proceedings, assuming she wasn't in charge. Such moments are stark reminders of the deep-seated bias that Black women attorneys face.

This experience is far from isolated. A 2023 survey by the Women Lawyers Division of the National Bar Association revealed that 70% of Black women attorneys have encountered or witnessed discrimination at work. Nearly half feel compelled to educate colleagues about diversity and equity, simply due to their racial identity.

The underrepresentation of Black women in the legal profession is striking. They comprise just 4. 1% of all U. S. lawyers. Systemic barriers have long guarded this exclusive space, making access difficult for women of color. Despite these obstacles, Black women have fought for their place. Attorney Ashley V. Gantt, a Florida state representative and president-elect of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers' Association, has faced similar dismissals.

She recalled being mistaken for a lawyer's assistant, despite having the docket in front of her.

Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes: A Trailblazing Attorney** Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes is a highly accomplished attorney who has made history by becoming the first Black woman to lead the Florida Bar in its 77-year history. With over 20 years of experience as a board-certified civil trial lawyer, she has established herself as a respected expert in personal injury, medical negligence, and product liability.

Baker-Barnes' journey to the top has not been without its challenges. Despite her impressive credentials, she has faced bias and exclusion throughout her career. She has recounted instances where she was mistaken for someone else or assumed not to be in charge, simply because of her racial identity. These experiences have not deterred her, however, and she has continued to push forward, paving the way for other Black women attorneys.

As a leader in the legal profession, Baker-Barnes is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has spoken out about the stark underrepresentation of Black women in the legal profession, citing a 2023 survey that found 70% of Black women attorneys have experienced or witnessed discrimination at work.

Her own experiences and those of her colleagues have informed her advocacy for change.

When Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes walked into a courtroom one morning for the first day of trial, the judge glanced across the room and said they'd begin when the attorney arrived. Even now, as the first Black woman to lead the Florida Bar in its 77-year history, she still encounters people who assume she isn't in charge. Moments like these, she said, are sharp reminders of how deeply bias runs in a profession that often questions the legitimacy of Black women attorneys.

Lower Southampton Man Accused Of Stalking 14-Year-Old Social Media Influencer

A Lower Southampton man has been embroiled in a disturbing case of alleged stalking. The individual, whose name has not been disclosed, reportedly developed an unhealthy fixation on a 14-year-old social media influencer. Over a period of three months, he allegedly bombarded her with disturbing emails, obsessive messages, and even sent nude photos.

This is not the first time the man has been in trouble with the law. Records reveal that he was convicted of harassment in an unrelated case back in 2017. He has recently taken to suing Bucks County, claiming that the federal government owes him a staggering $100 million. His reasoning behind this claim is that a military vessel was allegedly named after his grandfather.

According to the Walton County, Florida, Sheriff's Office, the man's actions were deemed severe enough to warrant a court-ordered GPS monitor, as well as a directive to have no contact with minors or access to the internet. A $250,000 bond was also issued. At present, it --- unclear whether the individual is still incarcerated.

This case highlights the growing concern of online harassment and the importance of taking swift action against those who engage in such behavior.

Florida Gators Kick Off 2025 Season With Shutout Win, Climb In Rankings Ahead Of South Florida ...

Florida's football team kicked off the 2025 season with a resounding 55-0 victory over the Long Island Sharks, marking their first shutout under Coach Billy Napier. The Gators dominated their FCS opponent, but hints of rustiness were evident throughout the game. This win, although expected, is crucial as Florida faces a notoriously tough schedule.

The team's current standing among collegiate peers --- largely unaffected, but every victory counts. The sports media have reassessed their rankings following Week 1, with The Athletic's Chris Vannini reevaluating all 136 college football teams. Florida slipped three spots to No. 18, sandwiched between Michigan at No. 17 and Ole Miss at No. 19. Meanwhile, the South Florida Bulls, Florida's Week 2 opponent, made a significant leap after upsetting Boise State, rising from No. 59 to No. 20. The Bulls now sit just two spots behind the Gators ahead of their matchup in the Swamp.

The team's performance has been closely followed by sports media, including The Athletic's Chris Vannini, who provides weekly rankings of all 136 college football teams. Following Week 1, the Gators were ranked No. 18, a slight drop from their preseason ranking of No. 15. The team is currently sandwiched between the Michigan Wolverines (No.

Florida football opened up the 2025 campaign with its first shutout of the Billy Napier era on Saturday — a 55-0 shellacking of the Long Island Sharks. The Gators had little trouble handing their FCS opponent, but also showed a bit of rust over the course of the game. The victory does little to affect the Orange and Blue's current status among its collegiate gridiron peers, but every win counts when facing the toughest schedule in the sport. And given some of the upsets seen in Week 1, all is well that ends well for Florida.

Hilton Orlando checked all the boxes: a large pool oasis, fun themed drinks and comfy accommodations. Most of all, I was drawn to how close it was to Universal's new Epic Universe theme park, which I wanted to take my mom to.
Though we ended the trip with a cruise not a stroll through Hogwarts, I'm still glowing from our stay on land.

Here's my review of our three-day stay at the Hilton Orlando.

The moment we entered—even though we got in pretty late—we were met with plenty of staff to help check us in and avoid long lines. I can appreciate that beyond the property's proximity to Universal—it's a six-minute drive from Epic Universe with complimentary shuttle service—there's even a dedicated space in the lobby to book Universal tickets.

The convenience is built into the hotel experience. In fact, aside from Epic Universe, the property is close to other Orlando attractions like SeaWorld and Epcot, and just steps (literally) to the Orlando Convention Center, Plus, it's only a 16-minute drive from Orlando International Airport.
