Miami Beach hosts American Black Film Festival, opening with Crump documentary

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Florida-based civil rights attorney Ben Crump, best known for taking on high-profile cases, like representing the families of Trayvon Martin and George Floyd, is now the focus of a new Netflix documentary.

The documentary, "Civil," premieres on Juneteenth at the ABFF. Juneteenth commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when Federal troops took control of the state of Texas, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law in 1863.

Wilton Manors ready to celebrate Stonewall Pride Festival - CBS Miami

There are also lots of preparations as Stonewall Pride gets ready to welcome some 40,000 people to celebrate the LGBTQ plus community. People are coming from around the world. "We're here from Fort Myers," said John Michael. "We come probably 10 years in a row for pride.

Black southerners have been celebrating Juneteenth for decades. But it only became an official federal holiday last year.

It's a day to commemorate the day emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South — when a Union general arrived at the Southeast coast of Texas to finally share the news that they had been freed. That was on June 19, 1865.

Florida Gators sports shine in NCAA Academics report

The latest report, which marks the 18th year of the APR, contains rates through four years: from the 2017-18 academic year through the 2020-21 academic year. UF's overall score exceeded the national average of 984.

The Florida football team posted a score of 981, 12 points above the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) national average of 969.

Woman Completes Record-Setting Swim Wearing Mermaid Fin | PEOPLE.com

Swimmer Merle Liivand has set a new record for the farthest swim while wearing a monofin. Now, she hopes her accomplishment can shine a light on a more pressing issue: ocean plastic pollution.
