In The News:

C heap flights to the US are as rare as rocking-horse droppings these days, so to find a £578pp package that includes accommodation and drops you directly in as popular a holiday spot as Florida is quite something.

The key to this deal is Orlando: somewhere so beloved by British families that airlines lay on frequent nonstop flights — from regional airports too, including Glasgow and Newcastle — but that means they must fill those seats (and drop fares) when the kids are at school.

Rent a car for the day and within an hour you'll hit John F Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. Check beforehand if there's a launch or landing (nasa.gov), though at other times of the year it's still possible to enter the centre and try its sensational new Gateway: Deep Space Launch Complex experience. Drive a little further down this coastline, following the scenic Highway A1A (aka Atlantic Ave) and you'll reach Cocoa Beach for the surf scene and sundowners. Alternatively, rent a kayak or SUP board on the Banana River Aquatic Preserve, where there's a good chance of spotting manatees.

A final note to families out there — we haven't forgotten you. Tui also has last-minute availability this May half-term, staying at this hotel and others in Orlando, with deals from £597pp.

• Return Glasgow-Melbourne Orlando flights
• 20kg hold luggage
• Seven nights' room only at the Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista, departing on June 2 or 9 ( tui.co.uk )

Proof that Orlando has more to offer than just theme parks is provided at the Waldorf Astoria — right at your poolside cabana bed, in fact, along with a cocktail. There's also an 18-hole golf course designed by the acclaimed architect Rees Jones, and a spa that flaunts Florida's first Himalayan salt room. The Bull ⁘ Bear steakhouse and the art deco inspired Peacock Alley bar are as grown-up as it gets; you won't be bumping into Mickey and Minnie at this hotel.
Details Seven nights' room only from £1,181pp, including flights, departing on June 3 (ba.com)

Florida Man Catches Shark

Florida Man Catches Record-Breaking Tiger Shark Off Jacksonville Beach A Florida fisherman has reported catching the largest tiger shark of his career, measuring an impressive 15 to 18 feet in length and weighing approximately 2,000 pounds. Owen Prior, who leads a fishing group called First Coast Surf Fishing, caught the massive predator off the coast of Jacksonville Beach over the weekend.

Prior is an experienced fisherman, having caught hundreds of sharks before. However, this tiger shark was his personal best, surpassing a 14-foot hammerhead he had previously caught. According to Prior, he quickly freed the shark from the hook by hand and released it back into the water within two minutes. He expressed his excitement at being able to experience the power of such a large shark and ensuring its safe release.

Tiger sharks are common in Florida waters... and according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), they can be found in various habitats, including the open ocean, shallow bays, and river mouths. Despite their size, "these sharks are an important part of the marine ecosystem," "playing a vital role in maintaining the balance of the ocean's food chain." Prior's catch serves as a reminder of the awe-inspiring creatures that inhabit the world's oceans. As a fisherman and an advocate for responsible fishing practices... Prior's story highlights the importance of respecting and preserving these incredible animals and their habitats.

DWP's Welcome To Rockville Festival Sets Record With 200,000 Attendees

Welcome To Rockville Festival Draws 200,000 Attendees, Sets New Record for Danny Wimmer Presents According to Pollstar News, the four-day Welcome To Rockville festival held at Daytona International Speedway from May 9-12, 2024, drew in a record-breaking 200,000 attendees. The event featured 150 bands on five stages, showcasing the company's continued growth and expansion.

Despite industry predictions calling 2024 a soft year for festivals, Danny Wimmer Presents (DWP) has defied expectations by adding 40-plus bands to multiple large events. The success of Welcome To Rockville, DWP's largest event to date, can be attributed to the company's focus on details and catering to fan demands.

Del Williams, head of talent for DWP, credits the team's attention to detail, including property flow and crowd control... for maintaining a balance between the five music stages and keeping concessions and bathroom lines moving. In contrast to cutting back on essentials, DWP invested in new resources and infrastructure to better serve attendees.

The company's strategy has paid off, with the addition of new festivals, stages, and days, as well as the acquisition of two new festivals, Rocklahoma and Born Raised, which fit into DWP's rock and country holdings. Golden Sky, "a country festival held in Sacramento," "has also added a third day for 2024." Williams emphasized that the booking strategy is about maintaining balance and passion on every stage... adding value to the ticket price through the addition of more stages and more artists.

The success of Welcome To Rockville and DWP's other events is a testament to the company's commitment to prioritizing fan experience and delivering high-quality lineups.

Pride Month Explained: June Celebrates Present And Future Intersectionally

Pride Month: Understanding the Difference Between June and October Celebrations Throughout the year, numerous communities around the world come together to celebrate their identities, inclusivity, and social justice. Two notable occasions in this regard are Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October.

While many may be perplexed by the coexistence of these celebrations, it is essential to understand the distinct purposes and focus of each event. Pride Month, celebrated in June, is a month-long commemoration that "focuses on the present and the future of the community rather than the past," as explained by the Proud Trust.

This celebration is centered around National LGBTQ+ Pride Day, which takes place on June 28, the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The Stonewall Riots were a pivotal moment in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement... and June 28th is recognized as the day when the riots began. In contrast, LGBTQ+ History Month is observed in October, which is endorsed by prominent organizations such as GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and the National Education Association.

This month-long celebration acknowledges the historical struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, providing an opportunity for education, recognition, and unity. The term "pride" is rooted in the Stonewall Riots and the work of Brenda Howard... a bisexual woman recognized as the "Mother of Pride" for her role in organizing the first LGBTQ Pride March in 1970.

The word gained popularity among peers and key figures, and has since become synonymous with the LGBTQ+ community's celebration of identity and resilience. According to Florida Today, Pride Month, "as celebrated in June," is distinct from LGBTQ+ History Month, "as it is focused on the present and future of the community rather than the past." This distinction allows both celebrations to serve as powerful tools in the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition.
Image More details: See here

Some might be confused at Pride Month being in June since there are also Pride celebrations in October. October is designated as LGBTQ+ History Month , endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association and other national organizations.

Florida Rejects Climate Policy

Staff inbox at Florida Phoenix: Florida has rejected a climate change-focused energy policy. The policy aimed to ensure a reliable and cost-effective supply of energy that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth. Florida Governor DeSantis stated that the state rejects the designs of the left to weaken the energy grid, pursue a radical climate agenda, and promote foreign adversaries.

The policy included provisions for addressing global climate change, "reducing greenhouse gas emissions.".. and promoting renewable energy sources. The rejected policy also included provisions that required state agencies to contract with hotels and conference facilities that met certain environmental standards. The policy prohibited the construction or expansion of offshore wind facilities and certain wind turbines within a mile of the coast.

This is not the first time the DeSantis administration has shown a disinclination to combat climate change. In the past year, the administration has turned down federal funding for energy efficiency initiatives and vehicle emissions reduction projects. Dates of events: * A year ago: The DeSantis administration turned down more than $350 million in federal funding for energy efficiency initiatives.

* Another date (reported by The News Service of Florida): The administration rejected $320 million in federal funding to reduce vehicle emissions... part of the Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act intended for carbon-reduction projects.

* No specific date mentioned: Florida rejected the climate change-focused energy policy.

Florida Vacation Rental Legislation

Florida Vacation Rental Legislation: Striking a Balance between Accountability and Regulation The Sunshine State's vacation rental industry has been at the center of a heated debate, with proponents and opponents weighing in on the recently proposed Senate Bill 280. The legislation aims to establish accountability and regulate the industry, sparking concerns and criticisms from various stakeholders.

At its core, the bill seeks to empower the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to ensure that companies operating in the vacation rental market are doing so responsibly. This move is crucial in maintaining a safe environment for tourists and protecting Florida's top industry from potentially harmful activities.

The bill addresses the issue of unlicensed vacation rentals dodging tax obligations. According to a Florida TaxWatch report... the state is losing millions of dollars in licensing fees annually and potentially millions more in unpaid occupancy taxes. This means that Floridians must ultimately bear the burden of these unpaid taxes.

The legislation has drawn opposition from various fronts, with some city officials feeling it encroaches on their authority and vacation rental operators decrying the level of regulation. However, "it is worth noting that a balanced piece of legislation often elicits discontent from both sides." In light of the concerns and criticisms, "it is imperative that Gov." DeSantis signs Senate Bill 280 into law... providing Florida's vacation rental industry with the necessary safeguards and accountability measures.

This move will not only benefit the state's top industry but also protect the well-being of tourists and taxpayers alike.
Image More details: Found here

It seems obvious but it's worth stating again. When tourists visit the Sunshine State and transact business - at a restaurant, a lodging establishment, or elsewhere - they should have a basic expectation that the environment is safe. And, the state of Florida, for its part, has an interest in ensuring that companies transacting business are doing so in a responsible manner.
The vacation rental legislation (Senate Bill 280) takes important steps to empower the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to create that basic level of accountability.
It's also worth noting that unlicensed vacation rentals do further harm to Florida's taxpayers by dodging their tax obligations. A Florida TaxWatch report found that the state is losing millions of dollars in licensing fees each year and potentially millions more in unpaid occupancy taxes. That means the rest of us must pick up that tab.

DOJ Opposes Supreme Court Review

Title: DOJ Files Brief Opposing U.S. Supreme Court Review in Florida Sports Betting Case The United States Department of Justice has submitted a 31-page brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in the ongoing Florida sports betting case, West Flagler Associates, et al. v. Deb Haaland, et al. In the brief, the DOJ argues that the Supreme Court does not need to hear the appeal, allowing the lower court's decision to stand.

The case began when West Flagler Associates, a group of businesses, filed a lawsuit against Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland after the gambling compact between the Seminole Tribe and the State of Florida went into effect. The compact, which brings in an estimated $750 million annually from the Tribe over the next six years, has been widely supported by the State of Florida.

The compact allowed for online sports betting... which has been met with mixed reactions from Florida residents. So, "the legalization of online sports gambling provides a new and exciting option for bettors." But then, the Seminole Tribe's monopoly on sports gambling in Florida means that bettors are limited to using only the Hard Rock Bet app. The DOJ's brief argues that the lower court's decision should be upheld, "citing the tribe's sovereign immunity and the complex regulatory structure of the gambling industry." ^^, the legal battle surrounding online sports gambling in Florida continues to unfold.

As bettors wait for a resolution... they can use valuable resources such as point spreads to inform their betting decisions and keep up with the latest developments in the world of sports betting.

In The News:

Sometimes, there's nothing better than being a tourist for the day in your own state. As a Florida resident, I'm always looking for new places to visit without traveling far from home.

On a recent trip to Panama City Beach (PCB), Florida, I decided to visit Shell Island — known for its pristine beaches without souvenir shops, hotels, or restaurants — for the first time.

Like the millions of people who visit Florida for its beaches, I was excited to admire the water and enjoy the area's natural beauty.

To get there, I took the Shell Island Ferry, which shuttles visitors from St. Andrews State Park to the seven-mile-long island. The 15-minute ferry ride, which cost just under $30, transported me to a world completely different from PCB's typical tourism scene.

Here's what the ferry ride was like and why I can't wait to visit Shell Island's scenic beaches again.

To board the ferry, I entered St. Andrews State Park and paid a $4 admission fee as a solo driver.

Upon entering the park, a staff member instructed me to check in at the park's Pier Store. I waited there until a tram arrived to take passengers to the St. Andrews State Park marina, where the ferry would depart.

After a bumpy, 10-minute tram ride, we arrived at the docks and followed signs to board our boat .

Norm Carlson's Impact On Florida Athletics

Author comments: It was at a Florida basketball practice 70 years ago. A walk-on was trying to impress the skeptics at Alligator Alley. It wasn't working. Approximately 50 years later, Carlson retired as one of the most influential people in the history of Florida athletics. To which anyone too young to have seen Danny Wuerffel play might say, "Norm Who?" Carlson was Florida's "Sports Publicity Director," at least that was the job title when he was hired in 1963.

It changed to "Sports Information Director" to "Assistant Athletic Director" over the years. None of which capture the role Carlson played at UF. The Gainesville Sun is a source for this article. "Norm's legacy, to me, was the most incredibly kind, respected and wise people I ever came across," Jeremy Foley said.

"When I became AD... I was a young buck trying to figure it all out. Norm was always there for advice and presented it in such a professional and caring manner." I'd like to, but it would take a book to capture his impact at Florida. He wrote three of them about the Gators. You've heard of Heisman campaigns? Norm basically invented them in 1966, "when he made weekly calls," "mailed updates and film clips to Heisman voters on behalf of one Steve Spurrier." The Gainesville Sun is a source for this article.

"Some people think he won the Heisman for me," Spurrier said. "He had a big hand in it... I know that." The Gainesville Sun is a source for this article.

Black Bear At Disney World Closes Attractions

Image
Staff inbox: A Black Bear on the Loose at Disney World Forces Closure of Attractions Orlando, Florida - The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort had to temporarily close several attractions on Monday due to an incident involving a black bear. The resort's entire Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Hall of Presidents, Liberty Square Riverboat, A Pirate's Adventure, Tom Sawyer Island, and Walt Disney World Railroad including Fantasyland, Frontierland, and Main Street were all affected by the closure.

The bear, described as an adult female, was spotted in a tree within the park and prompted a swift response from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The agency deployed its biologists, staff from its bear management programme, and law enforcement officers to capture the animal. After a successful operation... the bear was relocated to an area in or around the Ocala National Forest.

The FWC emphasized that in most cases, it is ideal for bears to be given space and allowed to roam freely. However, "given the current circumstances," they felt it was necessary to intervene and relocate the bear to ensure the safety of park visitors and staff. The incident caused significant disruption for visitors to the theme park, "many of whom faced long queues due to the closures." Despite the inconvenience... parkgoers remained hopeful and expressed their understanding of the situation.
