Hurricane Idalia: Central Florida events canceled, postponed

As Hurricane Idalia continues its march across the Gulf of Mexico and toward Florida, residents are bracing for potential impacts by gathering sandbags and nonperishable food.

Although the current trajectory shows the storm avoiding a direct hit to Central Florida, a number of events have been canceled, postponed or rescheduled out of caution.

More than two dozen obscene books were ordered removed from Florida's Indian County schools this past Monday night after moms, dads, and concerned citizens read aloud from them. Each of the recitations were abruptly halted by the board chair, triggering the books ordered withdrawal.

Tropical Storm Warning and Watch Canceled for Dry Tortugas and Lower Keys Respectively

FLORIDA KEYS –  The National Hurricane Center canceled a tropical storm warning for the Dry Tortguas and a tropical storm watch for the Lower Florida Keys late Tuesday after Hurricane Idalia moved even further away from the island chain leaving only minor impacts.

Chip Kasper, the Florida Keys National Weather Service Office meteorologist in charge, reports that a coastal flood warning and a coastal flood advisory remain in effect for the Lower and Middle Keys, respectively.

Florida hotel chain offers hurricane ‘distress rates’ for Idalia evacuations

Rosen Hotels and Resorts in Orlando is lowering room costs ahead of Tropical Storm Idalia , which is expected to strengthen to a hurricane.

The hotel chain announced Monday it activated "distress rates" for Florida residents who want to evacuate inland. Rooms start at $69 per night and each hotel is waiving pet fees.

Coaches predict Tennessee, Florida to win SEC XC titles

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (August 29, 2023)-----  The Tennessee men's cross country team and Florida women's cross country team have been predicted to win the 2023 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships, according to a vote of the league's head coaches.

Florida was the unanimous pick to win the women's title with 13 first place votes. Arkansas was predicted to finish second, followed by Alabama in third.

DeSantis to skip South Carolina campaign events as Idalia approaches Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis said he will skip a planned campaign appearance in South Carolina on Monday and instead stay in Florida as the state gears up for Tropical Storm Idalia, which could make landfall as a hurricane later this week.

Instead, he said during a news conference Sunday that he'll stay in the state as the storm approaches.
