The Rise And Fury Of Travel Ball -

Image
A Debate on Competition and Level The world of youth baseball is undergoing a major transformation, as more and more youngsters are taking the field for a high-pressure game known as travel ball. While some argue that the intense, competitive nature of the sport is detrimental to young players, others believe it provides an unparalleled opportunity for them to hone their skills and compete at a high level.

The standard Little League format has remained largely untouched for over a century, but travel ball has exploded onto the national scene in recent decades. With faster pace and a focus on strategic play, travel ball has attracted youngsters as young as 6 years old. **The Benefits of High-Level Travel Ball:** * **Character building:** The travel ball diamond teaches valuable --- lessons such as discipline, sportsmanship, responsibility, and resilience... skills crucial not only on the field but also in daily ---.

* **High level of competition:** Elite travel ball programs around the country offer young athletes the opportunity to compete against highly skilled players in a professional setting.

* **Esports potential:** Many travel ball players develop a natural flair for the game, showcasing remarkable athleticism and strategic thinking... paving the way for potential careers in professional baseball or other sports. **Criticisms of the High-Level Travel Ball Culture:** * **Early specialization:** Critics argue that prioritizing travel ball at such an early age can lead to premature specialization of youth players who may not possess the natural physical development or foundational skills for the mental demands of the sport.

* **Emotional toll:** The pressure cooker atmosphere of top travel ball programs can be detrimental to young players' mental well-being, potentially leading to burnout and even depression.

* **Exclusion of less skilled players:** With the emphasis on high-level competition, several argue that less skilled players are left behind, facing an unfair disadvantage in a game that favors athleticism over natural talent.

**Finding the Balance:** At the heart of this debate lies the crucial question: How do we ensure the safety and well-being of young players while simultaneously nurturing their love for the game? This delicate balance requires open communication between coaches, parents, and youngsters themselves. It also means prioritizing holistic development, "incorporating other sports and activities into the kids' routine," "and fostering a supportive environment that values both skill and character development." The ongoing debate surrounding the evolution of youth ball highlights the ongoing tensions and complexities of the sport.

While some argue that the intense, competitive nature of the sport is detrimental to young players, others believe it provides an unparalleled opportunity for them to hone their skills and compete at a high level.

The debate is ongoing, but both sides agree that more young kids are playing travel ball, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.** A 280-mile trip home after the four games presented a unique situation for the South Florida Thunder team and their coach Matt Judkins. While the boys were eager to return to their routines and prepare for school... the ending of the season presented obstacles in terms of a fifth game.

This led to an intense debate surrounding the competitive level and the motivations and goals of the players and their families. This debate highlights the fact that travel ball has become an increasingly competitive game, with teams stretching the rules to maximize wins and showcasing athletes' skill and determination.

While some argue that this helps foster opportunities for young athletes, "others," "including those specializing in academics.".. emphasize that competing at a higher level can become detrimental and should be balanced with holistic development.

After a long weekend of baseball in Jacksonville — four games in two days — South Florida Thunder players piled into their parents' cars for the 280-mile trip home on a recent Sunday afternoon. If they had reached the final, they would have played a fifth game. But now, after finishing 2-2 and losing in the semifinals, it was time to get back to Palm Beach County. The boys needed to be rested and ready for school the next morning.

Alligator Vs. Human: A Dilemma

Image
Alligators on the prowl in Flagler County park, humans breaking the law A popular alligator, spotted by photographer Mike O'Meally, has sparked outrage in Flagler County, with humans facing charges for breaking the law. The alligator, nonchalantly sauntering around the park's dock, appeared to be enjoying a half loaf of bread left carelessly by a visitor.

This incident highlights the dangerous territoriality of alligators, which can be unpredictable and dangerous around unfamiliar humans. Experts emphasize the importance of respecting their natural fear of human beings and avoiding any interactions that could escalate. Although the photographer initially captured the alligator's attention with a loaf of bread... the situation took a dramatic turn as the human's fear and hasty movements triggered the alligator's natural instinct to defend itself.

This resulted in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) being called in to intervene and trap the alligator. The county's Assistant Director of General Services, Michael Lagasse, expressed deep concern over the incident. "The presence of an alligator in the park poses a significant threat to public safety," he warned.

"This animal, "which appears to be accustomed to humans," "could easily panic and attack if exposed to human interaction."" The situation has led to mixed reactions within the community. Some are appalled by the disregard for nature and the potential danger posed to visitors... while others defend the photographer's actions, stating that interactions with alligators should be documented to raise awareness about their behavior.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has assured the public that the alligator will be safely relocated and not put on display. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the precarious balance between human safety and alligator survival, highlighting the need for respectful coexistence and a greater understanding of these powerful creatures.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

Florida Governor Signs 20 Laws To Mitigate Hurricanes And Trafficking

Governor Ron DeSantis has signed all 20 bills into law, with several measures aimed at strengthening hurricane mitigation, funding red tide research, and combating human trafficking. The governor signed three bills related to the "My Safe Florida" hurricane mitigation program in Pinellas County, just one day after the initial signing.

A bill funding red tide research was signed in Naples. House Bill 197 targets human trafficking in the state, focusing on illicit massage parlors. The law explicitly prohibits sexual activity within massage businesses and offers a public record exemption for certain information, such as emails, phone numbers, and parcel ID numbers.

This exemption aims to reduce title fraud by keeping sensitive information confidential, "except in cases where a court order is issued." House Bill 341... also known as the "Safeguarding American Families Everywhere Act" (SAFE), is related to motor vehicle registration in the state. WKMG has provided further details on these bills... providing insight into the governor's efforts to strengthen state laws and protect citizens.

Hurricane Damage And Rebuilding

I recently had the opportunity to visit Little Palm Island, a 4.5-acre resort that was ravaged by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. As someone who previously spent a day and night on the island in February 2015, I was curious to see the extent of the damage and how the resort had been rebuilt. During my 2015 visit, my wife and I had a wonderful time exploring the island's coastal paths, playing games, and indulging in activities such as ocean kayaking and massages.

We stayed in one of the thatch-roofed bungalows and enjoyed dinner at the beachside Dining Room as the sun set over the water. However, Hurricane Irma brought devastation to the island, with 130mph winds causing significant damage. According to an article published in the Sun Sentinel, all of the resort's staff, including concierge Inga, beach cabana attendant Rolando, and spa manager Sandi... were not on the island during the storm, having evacuated to safer locations.

Fast forward to my most recent visit, and it was striking to see the extent of the repairs and rebuilding that had taken place. Inga, who greeted us at the dock, proudly pointed out the new walls, floors, and roofs that had been constructed to withstand future storms. Every aspect of the island, "from the wooden floors of the dining room to the thatched roofs of the 30 bungalows," "had been rebuilt." While the storm had clearly had a significant impact on the island... it was heartening to see the determination and resilience of the staff and owners who had worked tirelessly to restore Little Palm Island to its former glory.

In The News:

I didn⁘t know what to expect on Little Palm Island, the best place I knew. Much was sure to be different there since Hurricane Irma took it apart the morning of Sept. 10, 2017. I hadn⁘t been to the resort off Little Torch Key since February 2015, long before the storm passed through.

Back then, after my wife and I had spent a day and a night there, I wrote this about Little Palm Island:

⁘We wore ourselves out that day, trying to do everything before the sun set. We⁘d jump into an ocean kayak and take a few sharp turns into the mysterious mangroves around nearby Big Munson Island, or escape to SpaTerre for an 80-minute massage. We walked the crushed seashell paths around the island, playing the giant chess board, lounging by the pool, sampling Gumby Slumbers (Capt. Morgan spiced rum, Malibu coconut rum, fresh squeezed orange juice, pineapple juice, cranberry juice and rum-soaked coconut), swinging in hammocks, watching the Key deer run, till the sun began to set and we got hungry.

⁘Then we followed the footpaths, raked to Zen-garden like perfection (no leaf blowers to disturb our peace here), past the thatch-roof bungalows to the Dining Room. We took a table down on the white-sand beach as the sun began to sizzle into the west. Our own personal Mallory Square (without the fire jugglers).

⁘We were both worn out by the time we were holding hands again on the launch back to Little Torch Key.⁘

Since then, Irma had come ashore with wrecking 130 mph winds. And everybody else on Little Palm Island was somewhere else that day.

Inga from the concierge desk was in Pennsylvania. Rolando at the beach cabana was on Florida⁘s west coast. Sandi at the spa was miles away in Central Florida.

⁘Everything you see here now was all rebuilt,⁘⁘ Inga says, greeting us at the dock for a tour of the 4.5-acre island that used to be five acres before Hurricane Irma. All of it, from the wooden floors of the dining room that buckled under as much as eight feet of seawater to the thatched roofs of the 30 bungalows that blew away in the Cat. 4 force winds.

Women's Untold Stories Of Self-actualization In World War II-era Florida

Image
L. L. Kirchner's upcoming novel, Florida Girls, offers a nuanced exploration of women's self-actualization in a historical fiction setting. Unlike the idealized portrayals of #girlboss and #thatgirl, Kirchner's debut novel reminds us that women's stories are complex and varied, and not without conflict. The Queenpin Chronicles, a new series, delves into the ___s of World War II-era women who refuse to step back into their domestic roles with the return of men from the war. The St. Pete-based author aimed to highlight the untold stories of women in history, and Florida Girls does just that.

The novel centers around Thelma and her boss, Mrs. Kathleen Young, a complex character who embodies both gentility and ambition. Kirchner's portrayal of their relationship, marked by tension and power struggles... is a slow-burning and relatable depiction of women's roles in the workforce during this era. The author skillfully crafts asymmetry between Thelma and Mrs. Young, highlighting the intricate dynamics between women who are both dependent on and competing with each other.

Readers may be surprised to find that Florida Girls is not a romanticized portrayal of the Greatest Generation in Florida history. Instead, the characters are shrewd and resourceful, facing both good and bad hardships as they navigate the quest for self-determination in a world that often denied them this dream.

The novel offers a laugh-out-loud and thoughtful exploration of women's advancement... showcasing the grit and complexity that defines the human experience. Florida Girls, scheduled for release on May 28 from LILA BOOKS, "is the first installment in The Queenpin Chronicles series," "which will also explore stories set in Las Vegas and Havana." With its nuanced portrayal of women's stories, Florida Girls is a timely reminder of the importance of exploring and celebrating the untold histories of women.

We've all heard of social media personalities like #girlboss, which is a woman who triumphs in a boys-only business world. Or even #thatgirl, a wellness-focused woman who meditates and exercises her way to her best self. But, L. L. Kirchner's new novel Florida Girls (available May 28 from LILA BOOKS) is a lively historical fiction that reminds us that womanly self-actualization is an older, deeper story — and not without some serious conflict.

Florida High School Athletes Achieve Impressive Stats In Regular Season

The regular seasons for high school sports in Florida have concluded, and several Jacksonville-area athletes are leading the state in various statistical categories as they enter the postseason. Notably, Amiyah Jones, a freshman shortstop from Baldwin, has finished the regular season as the state's leader in runs scored, with a total of 53 rounds of the bases in her freshman year.

Jones, recognized for her speed and agility on the diamond, has also achieved impressive individual statistics, including a batting average of .483, 24 stolen bases, and 33 RBIs. In addition to Jones, several other Jacksonville-area players have distinguished themselves with exceptional performances. For example, Grace Jones, a senior pitcher from Episcopal, has reached the milestone of 1,000 strikeouts during her varsity career.

With this achievement, she joins an elite group of active pitchers in Florida... including Sophia Kardatzke of University Christian, who began pitching in sixth grade, and Jasmine Francik of Melbourne, Jayden Heavener of Pace, and Katelynn (Red) Oxley of Bartow. Throughout the season, Jones has demonstrated her prowess on the mound, finishing in the top three in the state in both wins and strikeouts, "while also ranking among the top 25 in on-base percentage and slugging average." Finally, "Northeast Florida's top beach volleyball team is peaking at the right time.".. as they prepare for the upcoming finals.

In The News:

The high school regular seasons for all Florida sports are officially in the books, and with that, several Jacksonville-area players are entering postseason atop the state list in various stat categories.

Like Amiyah Jones , the Baldwin speedster who closes her freshman regular season as Florida's runs scored leader. Counting Thursday's district final, the shortstop circled the bases 53 times this year, first in the state's MaxPreps list for softball.

One of the area's fastest on the diamond, she's accomplished a little bit of everything this year, batting .483 with six doubles, four triples, 24 stolen bases and 33 RBI to go with a 1.227 OPS.

A few other Jacksonville-area players who are ending the year in elite territory among Floridians.

Grace Jones became the latest Northeast Florida softball pitcher to reach the 1,000-strikeout mark, attaining the milestone during the fourth inning of Thursday's Region 4-3A final.

Following the game, players, coaches and fans gathered with "1,000" papers to celebrate the Episcopal senior's feat.

She joins University Christian's Sophia Kardatzke, who began varsity pitching in sixth grade, as Northeast Florida's active members of the 1,000-K club. It's a feat attained by only a handful of active pitchers around Florida, including Jasmine Francik of Melbourne, Jayden Heavener of Pace and Katelynn (Red) Oxley of Bartow.

Jones, not surprisingly, ranks near the top of Florida's list in multiple categories this year, tying for second in wins (23) and third in strikeouts (319) while also placing top-25 statewide in both on-base percentage and slugging average.

Northeast Florida's top team on the sand is peaking at the perfect time ahead of the beach volleyball finals.

Naples, Florida Tourist Destination

Image
Naples, a coastal city in southwest Florida, is renowned for its exceptional blend of shopping, recreational activities, and picturesque white sand beaches. While many areas in the region share similar characteristics, Naples stands out as a premier destination, offering the finest versions of each. The historic downtown area is home to luxurious boutiques and high-end shopping establishments, while the surrounding regions feature championship-level golf courses.

Located along the Gulf Coast of Florida, Naples boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches in the state. Naples is situated approximately 30 minutes north of Marco Island and an hour south of Fort Myers, making it the southernmost metropolitan area along the Gulf Coast. The city is conveniently accessible via I-75. While a small municipal airport is located within Naples... the closest major airport is Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers.

Naples has a rich history dating back to the 1880s, when it was founded by US Senator John Stuart Williams and Walter Halderman, a newspaper owner from Louisville. The area was named Naples due to its resemblance to the Italian city, famous for its waterfront location and mild climate. Following World War II, Naples experienced rapid growth, solidifying its position as the southernmost Gulf Coast retirement destination.

Residents of Naples enjoy a moderate climate, several degrees warmer than its northern counterparts for most of the year... making it an attractive location for those seeking a warm and relaxed ---style. With its unique blend of upscale amenities, recreational opportunities, "and stunning natural beauty," "Naples has established itself as a premier destination in southwest Florida."
Source: Visit website

Like many southwest Florida communities, Naples brings together the best of shopping, recreation, and beautiful white sand beaches. But residents here would definitely argue that Naples offers the best versions of all three. Historic downtown Naples is filled with high-end shops and boutiques. The surrounding areas are littered with championship-level golf courses. And this location along the southern Gulf Coast of Florida boasts some of the most stunning beaches you will find anywhere.

Boating Safety And Education

In November, we spoke with Captain Jared Simonetti of Clearwater Fishing Company, who expressed support for a proposal aimed at enhancing boater safety. According to Captain Simonetti, there is a need for more measures to be in place to protect boaters, particularly those who are new to the area or inexperienced. "Many individuals assume that boating is a simple and unrestricted activity... allowing them to operate vessels at high speeds without regard for safety or regulations," Captain Simonetti said.

He emphasized the importance of educating boaters to promote a better understanding of the waterways and responsible behavior. "It's crucial that we implement measures that encourage boaters to take the necessary steps to understand the environment and each other's actions," Captain Simonetti added. He believes that taking safety courses is an essential step towards achieving this goal.

Captain Simonetti's concern stems from the increasing congestion on the waterways... which he believes necessitates a more proactive approach to boating safety.

Gulfstream Park's Limited Connection To Kentucky Derby Contenders Revealed

The Kentucky Derby is one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the world, with a rich history of showcasing the finest thoroughbreds in the sport. In recent years, attention has turned to potential contenders for the big race, with many trainers and owners looking to identify the next winner. As part of this process, it's interesting to take a closer look at the tracks and courses where these horses have honed their skills.

One such track is Gulfstream Park, a premier racing facility in Florida known for hosting numerous high-profile events. While Gulfstream Park has a strong reputation for hosting top-class racing, the connection between the track and the Kentucky Derby is relatively limited. Interestingly... a recent analysis revealed that none of the Kentucky Derby horses have run at Gulfstream Park.

This may be due to the track's focus on hosting races with unique distances or surfaces, which may not be as well-suited for Derby hopefuls. Alternatively, trainers may opt to send their horses to other tracks with more similarity to the Derby's 1.25-mile distance. One notable exception to this trend is a horse named Just Steel, which was bred in Kentucky and has ties to the successful sire Justify.

Justify, of course, won the Triple Crown in 2018, cementing his status as one of the all-time greats in the sport. As such... it's likely that Just Steel will receive significant attention as a potential contender for the Kentucky Derby. While Gulfstream Park may not be a common destination for Derby hopefuls, it's clear that the track ___ an important part of the sport overall.

Ultimately, the search for the next Kentucky Derby winner is a complex and multifaceted process. Trainers and owners must carefully consider a range of factors, "from a horse's breeding and training to its physical condition and racing style." As the build-up to this year's Derby continues, "fans can expect to see a talented group of horses competing for glory." While Gulfstream Park may not be a major player in this regard, it's an important part of the horse racing landscape that will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the future of the sport.
