Florida Senate Considers Bill To Let Medical Patients Grow At Home

Florida Legislature Seeks to Expand Access to Marijuana with New Bill A new legislative push is underway in the Florida Senate to expand access to marijuana in the state. Senate Bill 546, filed by Senator Joe Gruters, would allow medical marijuana patients to grow no more than two cannabis plants at home, provided they obtain a "cultivation certificate" from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The bill is a response to the fact that voters rejected an amendment to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older last year. Currently, medical marijuana is only available to those with a valid card and can only be obtained at licensed dispensaries. Opponents of the bill, including cannabis companies... argue that the lack of language addressing home-grown marijuana in the previous ballot measure gave them too much control over the market.

"It didn't strictly prohibit it," said attorney Paula Savchenko. "It just didn't lay out a framework for it." These groups are opposed to the bill, "as they fear it would bring in more competition and potentially disrupt the market." But then... many people in favor of the bill see it as a way to expand access to marijuana for medical patients.

The fact that groups operating in the industry have given the bill a "mixed but generally favorable response" ← →
