As Cities Take Down Confederate Memorials, Florida Bill Seeks To Stop Them — And Put The Statues ...

In recent years, many cities across the United States have removed Confederate monuments as part of a broader reckoning with public memorials that commemorate the Confederacy. However, a new bill proposed in Florida seeks to stop these removals and even punish local officials who take down these monuments. State Rep. Dean Black, who is pushing the measure, argues that these monuments are part of history and should be protected.

Opponents of the bill argue that local elected leaders and their constituents should have the right to decide whether these monuments remain standing. They point out that Confederate memorials were erected to intimidate and scare the Black community after slavery, and that these monuments do not reflect the values of inclusivity and equality that are important for a fair and just society.

Overall, the debate over Confederate monuments is complex and contentious, and it ### to be seen how this bill will be received by lawmakers and the public. However, it is clear that there are strong feelings on both sides of the issue, and it will likely continue to be a topic of discussion and debate in the coming months [+]

Broward Girls Swimmer Of The Year: Erika Pelaez, South Florida HEAT Senior

Erika Pelaez, a senior at the South Florida HEAT, has been a dominant force in high school swimming for five years, winning every individual event she has competed in since eighth grade. At this year's state meet, she broke four state records and won all her individual events for a fifth consecutive year, accumulating 18 FHSAA state medals (12 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze, and a fourth-place finish). Pelaez also placed ninth and 12th in relay events. Pelaez represented the USA at the World Junior Championships in September and broke a national record in the 50 freestyle at a high school meet prior to states.

Several New Florida Laws Going Into Effect On January 1

Senate Bill 774, also known as the Ethics Requirements for Public Officials Act, requires public officials to disclose more detailed financial information, including their net worth and the dollar value of every asset they own worth over $1,000. Several local city council members have already resigned before the end of the year due to concerns about privacy and security.

House Bill 425 expands Florida's Move Over Law, requiring drivers to move over a lane for disabled vehicles displaying warning or hazard lights or if there's someone outside the vehicle while it's stopped. The law already applies to emergency, sanitation, utility, construction, and road maintenance vehicles, and drivers who cannot move over must slow down to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.

According to the article, these new laws are expected to go into effect on January 1, 2023. Senate Bill 774 aims to increase transparency in government by requiring public officials to disclose more detailed financial information.

Casino Operator Wants Sports Betting In Florida Decided By Voters

West Flagler Associates, which operates casinos in Florida, has brought an argument before the Florida Supreme Court regarding the future of online sports betting in the state. In a 52-page response, the company argues that the language of Florida gaming legislation defines sports betting as a gaming activity, similar to slots and table games. The company's counsel, Raquel A. Rodriguez, emphasizes that the compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe treats all sports betting as a gaming activity, and therefore, it should be decided by voters.

The Florida Supreme Court has a tough decision to make as it considers arguments from both sides of the issue. Until then, both parties will continue to benefit from Florida gaming. In June, the D.C. Circuit reversed a lower-court judgment that blocked the 2021 compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe after West Flagler argued that the compact permitted gaming outside of Native American lands, which violates the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

Hungry Alligator Devours Huge Python At Florida Park | KASI-AM

Opinion column: A jaw-dropping video captured the moment a massive alligator devoured a huge Burmese python in Everglades National Park. Wildlife photographer Alison Joslyn recorded the thrilling encounter while on Shark Valley Trail, according to FOX 35. "What a thrill to come across an alligator eating a large invasive Burmese Python in Shark Valley as I was out riding my bike," she said. "As an amateur wildlife photographer, I knew immediately I was seeing something very special."

Burmese pythons, one of the largest snake species in the world, aren't native to Florida and have wreaked havoc on the state's ecosystems. There have even been instances where these massive reptiles have preyed upon alligators, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

In the video, the alligator can be seen swallowing the python whole, its jaws closing around the snake with a satisfying crunch.

The Orange And Beach Ball Drops. Only-in-Florida New Year’s Eve Traditions

The Orange and Beach Ball Drops: In Florida, New Year's Eve traditions include dropping an orange or a beach ball. While the physical orange ball hasn't been dropped since 2020, a virtual projection has taken its place. Orlando topped the list of "only in Florida" experiences, thanks to its wide range of quality entertainment opportunities, including clubbing and fireworks in front of the Cinderella castle. Orlando scored high in legality of fireworks, nightlife options, and affordable restaurants rated 4.5 stars or higher.

Miami's high ranking came from its sterling reputation for diverse dining options. The city ranked first in WalletHub's "restaurants per capita" category. Apple's most popular earbuds are now more affordable, offering noise-canceling and bass-booming features. Limited-edition picks are available for those looking to upgrade their audio experience. Resolutions are an important tradition in some homes, but not all families follow this tradition.

Florida Bill Would Allow Gambling Permit Transfers To Other Locations

Image
A new bill filed in the Florida Senate would allow gambling permit holders to transfer their permits to a new location, potentially paving the way for new casinos in South Florida. The bill, filed by state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, would allow those with greyhound dog racing permits and authorization to conduct casino activities to move their operation within a 30-mile radius, regardless of any local government regulations. This proposal has raised concerns among gaming opponents, who have sought to block the introduction of gambling in new areas of South Florida.

The bill's language suggests that it could be used to bring new casinos to Miami-Dade County, where there has been a longstanding effort to block the introduction of gambling. The mayor of Miami Beach, Dan Gelber, has been a vocal opponent of gambling and has described the bill as an "existential threat" to the community. In 2021, a deal negotiated by Gov.
