Publix's Rise To Success: A Story Of Entrepreneurship And Innovation

Staff inbox at USA TODAY:

Publix's Rise to Success: A Story of Entrepreneurship and Innovation The Publix Super Markets Inc. has become a household name in Florida, with its 240,000 employees spread across seven states. The company's success is a testament to the vision and leadership of its founder, known as "Mr. George" Jenkins. Jenkins, a Georgia native, moved to Ybor City in Tampa and worked for the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain before founding Publix nearly a century ago. The company's humble beginnings marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that would make Publix one of the most successful homegrown enterprises in the state.

Under Mr. Jenkins' guidance, Publix expanded its operations and became a beloved institution in Florida. The company's commitment to quality and customer service has earned it a reputation as one of the best places to work... with numerous accolades on lists of top companies to work for. However, Publix's success has not been without controversy.

The company's decision to insist on bagging groceries in plastic has drawn criticism from some consumers. Despite this, the company's popularity endures, "with its products," "such as its subs and BOGOs.".. becoming a staple of the colloquial culture.

Publix is a supermarket chain founded by George Jenkins, a Georgia native who moved to Ybor City in Tampa and worked for Piggly Wiggly before establishing the company nearly a century ago. Publix is now a Lakeland-based, employee-owned company with more than 240,000 people on its payroll and operates in seven states.

The company's success has contributed to Florida's reputation as a major tourist destination, with Central Florida becoming a theme park metropolis thanks to Walt Disney's decision to build a park in the area. Other major attractions, such as Universal Studios and Sea World, "have also been established.".. making Florida the world's biggest tourism magnet.

The founder of the Publix supermarket chain was known as "Mr. George." Jenkins established the supermarket chain that is arguably the state's most popular and successful homegrown enterprise — and which now operates in seven other states. That's impressive in Florida, a state not known for spawning corporate headquarters.
In fact, in 2023 the state had fewer Fortune 500 companies based within its boundaries than California, New York and Texas. Today, the Lakeland-based, employee-owned company has more than 240,000 people on its payroll. That the company is a perennial favorite on lists of best companies to work for speaks to its widespread popularity, although it has drawn pushback as pricey and for policies like insisting on bagging in plastic.
More importantly, you know a company is important when its products enter the colloquial arena, like Pub subs and BOGOs. A Georgia native, Jenkins moved to Ybor City in Tampa and worked for another grocery chain, Piggly Wiggly, before founding Publix nearly a century ago.
We could have picked his nephew Roy Disney or former CEO Michael Eisner. The two parlayed the company's initial properties, the Magic Kingdom and Polynesian and Contemporary hotels, into a global tourism mecca we enjoy today. But it was Walt Disney's decision to build a park in Central Florida that ultimately transformed the state from a beach resort to a theme park metropolis.
Today, it's not just the Disney Co.'s four theme parks, other attractions and tens of thousands of hotel rooms. Universal Studios has built three parks and is about to add a massive fourth, Epic Universe. Together, along with Sea World and other draws, Central Florida is a reason Florida is arguably the world's biggest tourism magnet.
And like World War II three decades before, Disney World didn't just attract tourists after it opened in 1971. It helped convince them to move, spurring another wave of migrations. At one point, a couple thousand people were moving to Florida each day, and their introduction to the state via a visit to the Disney kingdom was a major reason why.

Justice For Wrongly Convicted: A Champion Of Wrongful Conviction Reform

First seen in Tampa Bay Times:

Sandy D'Alemberte was a highly accomplished individual who made significant contributions to the field of law and public service. As the late attorney and former Florida State University President, he championed a law that provided compensation to people wrongly convicted of crimes, with the stipulation that they had not previously committed felonies.

His efforts led to the passage of a law in 2008, which has been instrumental in helping exonerees receive financial compensation for their wrongful convictions. DuBoise, a man who maintained his innocence throughout his decades-long ordeal, was an example of the impact of D'Alemberte's work. After spending years trying to secure compensation, DuBoise was finally awarded $1. 85 million in 2023, thanks to the efforts of his pro bono attorneys, lobbyists, "and lawmakers," "including Rep." Traci Koster... who has since become a vocal advocate for changing the law to eliminate the "clean hands" provision.

The Florida Legislature in 2008 passed a law, championed by the late attorney and Florida State University President Sandy D'Alemberte, that said the state should compensate people who were wrongly convicted of crimes — so long as they hadn't previously committed felonies. Under the law, exonerees found innocent by the court that convicted them are eligible for $50,000 for each year they served in prison.
The compensation is capped at $2 million.
DuBoise, who maintained his innocence throughout his decadeslong ordeal, wasn't eligible for compensation because, as a 17-year-old, he had been convicted of three unrelated felonies. He and his pro bono attorneys and lobbyists spent three years trying to convince Florida lawmakers to approve a special type of legislation known as a "claim" bill to provide $1.85 million to DuBoise.
Lawmakers signed off on it in 2023.

Florida Gators Rally Past Dayton with Cade Kurland's Walk-Off Homer In a dominating performance, the Florida Gators secured their second consecutive win, defeating Dayton 12-2 in the series finale, thanks in large part to a monster game from pinch hitter Cade Kurland. The junior outfielder made the most of his limited playing time, hitting two home runs, including a walk-off blast in the bottom of the 8th inning that sealed the game via run rule.

With the Gators comfortably ahead 10-2 in the 8th inning, Kurland took the plate with one out and two runners on base. Rather than continuing to bat through the 9th inning, he decided to end the game with a bang, hitting a two-run homer that made it 12-2, prompting the umpires to call the game in favor of the Gators.

Uncovering The Forgotten History Of Palm Beach's Baseball Trailblazers And Legends

Title: The Forgotten Hall of Famers of Palm Beach: A Glimpse into Baseball's Past The National Baseball Hall of Fame's 351 inductees are a testament to the greatest players in the sport's history, but few know about the trailblazers who paved the way for them. In the early 20th century, a group of talented baseball players from Palm Beach, Florida, were inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously, their contributions to the sport largely forgotten.

These players were part of the Florida Hotel League, also known as the Coconut League, a winter baseball circuit that took place from the 1900s to the 1920s. The league was centered around two hotels: The Breakers and its sister hotel, directly across the lake. The Breakers, owned by the wealthy Henry Flagler, was a popular destination for the elite... and its hotel baseball program was a major draw.

The league was formed as a way to provide entertainment for the hotel's guests, "who would often gather in the grandstands to watch games," "place wagers.".. and socialize with other high-society individuals. Among the players who were inducted into the Hall of Fame were men who were part of this league.

While winning a Tony or Oscar award for lifetime achievement is high praise for stage and movie actors, the equivalent in pro baseball is an honor held by a half-dozen men who once regularly suited up in woolen Palm Beach uniforms to compete on a diamond now greened over by The Breakers' golf course. That was more than a century ago, when these players forged talented careers that took them from Palm Beach — where they competed on two all-Black hotel teams, including one for The Breakers — to wherever else a segregated nation permitted them to play in the early 20th century. Major League Baseball then did not allow Black players on the field.
