Florida voters opt to keep commission to amend constitution – WSVN 7News | Miami News, ...

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida voters decided to keep a commission that meets every 20 years to make changes to the state constitution despite lawmakers who argued it is no longer needed.

Critics said Florida's Constitutional Revision Commission had gone beyond its original mandate and lacked accountability, and the Legislature decided last year to ask voters to abolish it in a ballot measure.

Darren Soto, Bill Posey easily re-elected in Central Florida congressional contests

In all three CD 8 counties, Posey held a dominating lead with a majority of precincts reporting. He had about 65% of the vote to Terry’s 35%.

The incumbent expended more than $529,000 on his re-election effort, but still closed a federal reporting period on Oct. 19 with more than $580,000 in cash on hand. By comparison, Terry only ever raised $85,019 for the longshot bid.

South Carolina's BJ Gibson Out vs.

The initial diagnoses indicated that they dodged a bullet. Gibson has a hamstring injury, but it doesn't seem that it will be a severe issue. Hamstrings tend to linger, so it's something to monitor moving forward.

South Carolina's defensive depth is being tested. Many secondary members are injured, and safety RJ Roderick entered the transfer portal a few weeks ago. The Gamecocks are so thin that Beamer addressed the notion of switching some wide receivers to corner, though he stated they would not.

How To Watch: South Carolina vs.

Head coach Shane Beamer noted the team understands the challenge Florida presents. The Gators haven't consistently put it together this season, but they have high-level talent that keeps them competitive.

Florida is playing some of their best football of late. They played a complete game in all three phases against Texas A&M and showed resolve while losing to Georgia. Quarterback Anthony Richardson hasn't had a turnover in a month, and the run game keeps them in advantageous situations.

Rising travel, food costs straining college athletic budgets - Sports Talk Florida - N

College athletic programs are reacting to soaring inflation the same way as everyone else — they're looking for ways big and small to save money.

In the Power Five, home of college sports' biggest budgets and most considerable resources, schools are working with boosters and other partners to try to bridge the financial gap. Working down the line to smaller institutions, where budgets and resources are smaller, creativity is a must.

Is San Diego In The Running For An MLS Expansion Team? - Sports Talk Florida - N

Out of nowhere, there were reports out of San Diego that San Diego soccer backers that included a local gambling tribe and an Egyptian billionaire were closing in on landing a Major League Soccer franchise. The report was not initially confirmed by Major League Soccer.

But the San Diego State University stadium could be used for soccer. This past May, San Diego State athletics director JD Wicker said the venue was given the go ahead by MLS officials as a venue that was up to league standards.

A cult thrived along a Florida river. Did their settlement survive Hurricane Ian?

Koreshan State Park, 135 acres along the Estero River near Fort Myers, preserves several of the cult's buildings, and all of the history of a group of people who thought of the world in a different way.

Like much of the surrounding area, the park took a hit from the hurricane. On Sept. 28, Ian mowed over trees and vegetation, and storm surge washed over the grounds, said Alexandra Kuchta, press secretary for Florida's Department of Environmental Protection.

Cerabino: In free state of Florida, we dip into socialism when it fits us

This hurricane season is poised to swamp parts of both coasts of Florida, and by doing so, point out the high cost of rampant, under-insured development.

Even before Tropical Storm Nicole brings high winds and flooding to the east coast this week, Southwest Florida is still drying out after the ravages of Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm that hit in late September.

Is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis emerging as the new and improved Donald Trump?

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has the elite credentials of a prototypical US presidential candidate, from graduating with honours from Yale and Harvard Law School to earning a bronze star for meritorious service in the military.

Trump threw his support behind DeSantis in his inaugural bid for the governorship in 2018, attending rallies in Florida and calling him a " brilliant young leader ". But that support is conspicuously absent as DeSantis faces re-election.
