Central Florida’s festivals and events happening for Juneteenth

Juneteenth, referencing June 19, marks the day that Galveston, Texas saw the arrival of Union soldiers in 1865 with news that the American Civil War had ended and those who were enslaved were now free.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally recognized commemoration of slavery's end in the U.S., but it was not an official federal holiday until 2021. The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed by President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021, officially making June 19 a federal holiday.

Florida bill allowing cities, counties to restrict beach smoking still pending – Action News Jax

UPDATE 6/21/2022: The News Service incorrectly reported in a brief Friday that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill (HB 105) that would allow cities and counties to restrict smoking at beaches and parks that they own. The brief was based on information posted on the Florida Senate website.

The bill (HB 105) builds on a 2002 constitutional amendment that prohibited smoking in restaurants and at other indoor workplaces.

The "We Need A New Arena Or Stadium Tour" is about to set up shop in Minneapolis where one of the owners of the National Basketball Association's Minnesota Timberwolves, Alex Rodriguez, has made mention that the Timberwolves business needs a new arena.

When the NBA expanded in the late 1980s, it awarded the franchise to Ratner and Wolfenson who paid about $32 million for the team. But the  two men also decided to build an arena without public assistance. The arena was supposed to cost about $70 million.
