In April 1958, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., met at Orlando's Washington Shores Elementary School for a regional conference in the group's 50th anniversary year.

Judging by newspaper accounts, the meeting was a success. Orlando Mayor Robert Carr and Z.L. Riley, executive secretary of the Negro Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the women in person to the City Beautiful.
