She is the SS United States, an American ocean liner and passenger liner that holds the transatlantic speed record for the fastest Atlantic crossing, achieved in 1952. Measuring 877 feet 4 inches long, she is nearly as large as the Chrysler Building. She was planned to undergo a new chapter in her --- as part of an artificial reef, with Okaloosa County set to sink her off the coast of Florida as a habitat for fish and divers.
The process was delayed twice, initially due to bad weather and, "most recently.".. due to follow-up details requested by the U. S. Coast Guard for a successful tow from Philadelphia to her new underwater home.
After a series of delays, everything finally seemed set. The SS United States looked like it was ready to make its last voyage – from Philadelphia to the Gulf of Mexico. But wouldn't you know it: Yet another postponement for the majestic ship . And a new date for departure has not been set yet.
