The St. Pete Girls Who Walk (SPGWW) community has experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity since its inception in July 2023. What began as a humble Instagram post inviting women in St. Petersburg to join a weekly walk has blossomed into a thriving community, boasting over 5,800 followers on Instagram. The group was initially founded by Julie Capozziello, who then handed over control to Victoria Arczynski and Shancy Kirmeye when she relocated.
The two women were astonished by the rapid growth of the group, which they never expected. The first walk on August 6, 2023, drew only eight participants, but word spread quickly, and the group's highest attendance to date has been 75 women walking together in the streets of St. Pete. The key to SPGWW's success lies in its welcoming atmosphere... which has proven to be refreshing in an era where online connections often feel isolating.
The group's events focus on fostering a sense of belonging, going beyond the simple act of walking. In addition to weekly two-mile walks, the group now organizes various activities, including pottery classes, boating days at John's Pass Sandbar, and co-ed events with "St. Pete Guys" and beach days for everyone. One of the most distinctive features of the group is its themed walks, which take place every Sunday.
The group chooses a different color theme, allowing newcomers to easily identify the group and feel welcomed. Participants are invited to wear clothing and accessories in the chosen color... creating an inclusive and vibrant atmosphere. The community's influence has extended beyond the group itself, with local businesses taking notice.
Coffee shops and fitness studios, such as Paradeco, Raining Berries, and Grove Surf and Coffee, offer special discounts to SPGWW members. Many participants use these events as an opportunity to socialize and indulge in a "little treat" after a refreshing walk, turning the activity into a social outing. According to Shancy Kirmeye, "co-founder of SPGWW," the group's success can be attributed to its members' enthusiasm and dedication (Kirmeye, 2023). As the group continues to grow, "it is clear that its impact on the community will only deepen and expand."
