Image

A powerful storm is brewing in the Atlantic, with Hurricane Erin expected to make its presence known along the southeastern coast of the United States. The National Weather Service in Miami is forecasting rough seas, with waves reaching up to 8 feet at the beach and seas of 5 to 9 feet between August 20 and 22. The storm's impact will be felt in Palm Beach County, Florida, where the northern end of the Bahamas island chain leaves it more vulnerable to northerly swells.

Meteorologist Chris Fisher notes that the county often bears the brunt of such swells, and it's possible that the seas could be even higher than forecast. In addition to rough seas, Erin is expected to bring drier air to South Florida, with rain chances increasing to 60% by August 22. The storm's counterclockwise bands will bring north and westerly breezes to the area, "providing some relief to coastal Palm Beach County.".. which has been experiencing severe drought.

As of August 18, "Erin was a major hurricane with 140 mph sustained winds.".. moving west-northwest at 10 mph. The National Hurricane Center predicts that it will strengthen to 145 mph before beginning to wane mid-week.

The National Weather Service in Miami is predicting seas of 5 to 9 feet between Aug. 20 and Aug. 22, with breaking waves at the beach reaching up to 8 feet as Erin grinds east of the Bahamas before strafing the Outer Banks and heading out to sea. While the limestone islands of the Bahamas protect most of the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula, Palm Beach County is at the northern end of the chain, meaning more swell can sneak around Grand Bahama and Great Abaco.
