Central Florida's $Billions-Dollar Southern Beltway Project Set To Revolutionize Regional Highway ...

Published by Orlando Sentinel:

The Central Florida Expressway Authority is embarking on an ambitious project to revolutionize the region's highway infrastructure by developing a southern beltway, a 60-mile loop that promises to significantly reduce commute times for Osceola County residents and enhance travel efficiency across the region. This massive undertaking is expected to connect various road projects, two contentious expressways, and a new state-funded road to the authority's existing 125-mile infrastructure, at a substantial cost of billions of dollars.

With an estimated completion date of 2050, this project builds upon decades of meticulous planning that foresaw the region's remarkable growth. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, a member of the CFX board... emphasized that some of the roads currently considered contentious were planned 20-30 years ago as part of a comprehensive system.

He stressed the importance of adapting to growth, "stating," "We are going to continue to grow and we've got to figure out how to handle that growth appropriately." Central Florida has consistently ranked among the nation's fastest-growing areas, "with the Orlando metro area swelling to nearly 3 million people by mid-2024.".. placing it among the top 20 most populous regions in the country.
