Fort Partners and Merrimac Ventures, two successful developers from Florida, are teaming up to launch a nearly $1 billion project in Telluride, Colorado. The project will feature a Four Seasons hotel and residential complex, with 52 guest rooms and 68 residences, each priced over $2 million. The developers aim to open the property two to three years after construction begins, and while the project is their first outside of Florida, they are confident in Telluride's untapped luxury real estate potential.

Despite being unfamiliar with skiing, Merrimac's co-managing partner, Dev Motwani, was convinced by a businessman from Telluride during a New York City visit to invest in the project. Merrimac's partner, Nadim Ashi, a dedicated skier with three decades of winter visits to Telluride, jumped on the concept. As Cities Take Down Confederate Memorials, Florida Bill Seeks To Stop Them — And Put The Statues ...

In recent years, many cities across the United States have removed Confederate monuments as part of a broader reckoning with public memorials that commemorate the Confederacy. However, a new bill proposed in Florida seeks to stop these removals and even punish local officials who take down these monuments. State Rep. Dean Black, who is pushing the measure, argues that these monuments are part of history and should be protected.

Opponents of the bill argue that local elected leaders and their constituents should have the right to decide whether these monuments remain standing. They point out that Confederate memorials were erected to intimidate and scare the Black community after slavery, and that these monuments do not reflect the values of inclusivity and equality that are important for a fair and just society.

Overall, the debate over Confederate monuments is complex and contentious, and it ### to be seen how this bill will be received by lawmakers and the public. However, it is clear that there are strong feelings on both sides of the issue, and it will likely continue to be a topic of discussion and debate in the coming months [+]

Several New Florida Laws Going Into Effect On January 1

Senate Bill 774, also known as the Ethics Requirements for Public Officials Act, requires public officials to disclose more detailed financial information, including their net worth and the dollar value of every asset they own worth over $1,000. House Bill 425 expands Florida's Move Over Law, requiring drivers to move over a lane for disabled vehicles displaying warning or hazard lights or if there's someone outside the vehicle while it's stopped. The law already applies to emergency, sanitation, utility, construction, and road maintenance vehicles, and drivers who cannot move over must slow down to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.

According to the article, these new laws are expected to go into effect on January 1, 2023. Senate Bill 774 aims to increase transparency in government by requiring public officials to disclose more detailed financial information.

Casino Operator Wants Sports Betting In Florida Decided By Voters

West Flagler Associates, which operates casinos in Florida, has brought an argument before the Florida Supreme Court regarding the future of online sports betting in the state. In a 52-page response, the company argues that the language of Florida gaming legislation defines sports betting as a gaming activity, similar to slots and table games. The company's counsel, Raquel A. Rodriguez, emphasizes that the compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe treats all sports betting as a gaming activity, and therefore, it should be decided by voters.

The Florida Supreme Court has a tough decision to make as it considers arguments from both sides of the issue. Until then, both parties will continue to benefit from Florida gaming. In June, the D.C. Circuit reversed a lower-court judgment that blocked the 2021 compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe after West Flagler argued that the compact permitted gaming outside of Native American lands, which violates the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The Orange And Beach Ball Drops. Only-in-Florida New Year’s Eve Traditions

The Orange and Beach Ball Drops: In Florida, New Year's Eve traditions include dropping an orange or a beach ball. While the physical orange ball hasn't been dropped since 2020, a virtual projection has taken its place. Orlando topped the list of "only in Florida" experiences, thanks to its wide range of quality entertainment opportunities, including clubbing and fireworks in front of the Cinderella castle. Orlando scored high in legality of fireworks, nightlife options, and affordable restaurants rated 4.5 stars or higher.

Miami's high ranking came from its sterling reputation for diverse dining options. The city ranked first in WalletHub's "restaurants per capita" category. Apple's most popular earbuds are now more affordable, offering noise-canceling and bass-booming features. Limited-edition picks are available for those looking to upgrade their audio experience. Resolutions are an important tradition in some homes, but not all families follow this tradition.

Florida Bill Would Allow Gambling Permit Transfers To Other Locations

Image
A new bill filed in the Florida Senate would allow gambling permit holders to transfer their permits to a new location, potentially paving the way for new casinos in South Florida. The bill, filed by state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, would allow those with greyhound dog racing permits and authorization to conduct casino activities to move their operation within a 30-mile radius, regardless of any local government regulations. This proposal has raised concerns among gaming opponents, who have sought to block the introduction of gambling in new areas of South Florida.

The bill's language suggests that it could be used to bring new casinos to Miami-Dade County, where there has been a longstanding effort to block the introduction of gambling. Florida Christmas Traditions You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

Florida Christmas traditions are unique and different from those in colder climates. Instead of bundling up and watching snowfall, Floridians enjoy sunbathing during the holiday season. One popular tradition is Surfing Santa's, which takes place in Cocoa Beach and features customized Santa Clauses surfing in the ocean. Another tradition is the boat parade, where residents decorate their boats with lights and other holiday decorations and parade them through the waterways.

In Florida, it's not uncommon to see sandmen instead of snowmen, as there is no snow in the state. To add a touch of holiday cheer to the beach, some residents set up real Christmas trees on the sand. Visitors can enjoy holiday-themed treats, parades, dancing, caroling, and more, all while surrounded by Disney characters. And, at Disney World, it even snows!

Overall, Florida Christmas traditions are all about embracing the sunny and warm weather of the state during the holiday season.

Proposed Florida Bill Would Allow For Expansion Of Gambling. What Are The Chances It Will Pass?

The new legislation, known as SB 1054, would allow gaming permit holders to transfer their licenses to new locations within a 30-mile radius. Exposed Pipe At Florida Beach Sparks Safety Concerns: ‘Get It Off’

A large pipe sticking out of the sand at a Florida beach has sparked safety concerns among beachgoers. The pipe, which has been exposed since last weekend's storm, is believed to be a hazard and people want to know why it's there and what's being done to fix it. According to Sandra Sullivan, who posted photos of the damaged pipe on social media, the pipe was installed in the 1950s and has been rapidly deteriorating.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is in charge of the infrastructure, and officials say the pipe has been at Hightower Beach Park for about 60 years. It's usually covered by sand, but the weather washes it away. Some people are concerned about the pipe's presence on the beach, especially with more housing being built nearby. Sandra Sullivan is worried about infrastructure like this and wants to see it fixed during the beach's re-development.

Florida Girls Basketball Player Heart Condition Helped By Other Team

Florida girls basketball player Rose, who was born with a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, had a remarkable performance in a game against Pensacola Catholic Crusaders on December 11. With limited time left in the game, Rose received a perfect pass from her teammate MaKayla Plato and sunk a layup, causing excitement in the Northview gym. The Crusaders then intentionally passed the ball to Rose under the basket, who went on to make three more layups, including one as the buzzer sounded. The elation and joy in the gym were palpable, with Rose's teammates and coaches cheering for her.

Rose's teammate Mary McGovern described the moment as "special," saying that the whole team was happy for her and that it was cool to see the ball coming towards her. Rose herself was excited to be a part of the play and thought that Catholic would keep blocking her, but instead, they intentionally passed the ball to her.

As time dwindled down in the Northview girls basketball team's game against Pensacola Catholic Crusaders on Dec. 11, Gafford, one of the staff members for the Northview Chiefs who keeps track of the scorebook, said the plan was to get the ball to Rose.

Unique White Alligator Hatches In Florida Park

A rare and extraordinary event has occurred at Gatorland Orlando, a renowned alligator park in Florida, where a solid white leucistic alligator has hatched. This is the first documented case of such a hatchling since a nest of leucistic alligators was discovered in Louisiana over three decades ago. Gatorland Orlando has taken to Facebook to announce this groundbreaking moment, describing it as "beyond rare" and "absolutely extraordinary." Park authorities have expressed their excitement over the first-of-its-kind hatchling in the world, noting that there are currently only seven surviving leucistic alligators worldwide, with three of them residing in Gatorland.

Leucistic alligators are considered the rarest genetic variation in American alligators, with patches or splotches of normal coloration on their white skin and brilliant blue eyes. Due to their lack of dark skin pigmentation, these unique alligators are vulnerable to sunburn and cannot tolerate prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

The KitchenAid Stand Mixer: The Gift That Sped Up My Father-In-Law’s Pierogi-Making

Fast forward to last Christmas, and we decided to gift my father-in-law a roller set of his own, possibly per his wish list. For this year's pierogi-making weekend, my in-laws brought their entire mixer so we could have two dough rollers going at the same time. We did have more people attending, so we welcomed the additional roller, as it allowed more people to get involved in various parts.

Sports Betting In Florida | Florida | Islandernews.Com

Sports betting in Florida is currently available through online sportsbooks, with Hard Rock Bet being the only operator offering wagers to residents in the state. However, the state's sports betting landscape has been in a state of flux for some time, with a complicated history of legal challenges and regulatory changes. In 1992, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was enacted at the federal level, prohibiting sports betting outside of Nevada. However, in 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional, allowing individual states to regulate sports betting as they see fit.

Since the Supreme Court's ruling, more than $270 billion has been wagered on sports in the US, resulting in significant revenue for states through partnerships with mobile and online betting sites, as well as taxation of these activities. In Florida, the government has a standing compact with the Seminole Tribe, which grants the tribe exclusivity over certain gambling activities in exchange for a minimum flat fee paid to the state [+]

The state of sports betting in Florida seems to be in constant flux, and it is a long and complicated story as to why – but as it stands, you can place sports bets , but are limited to the use of online sportsbooks in Florida , with Hard Rock Bet being the only operator to offer wagers to residents in Florida.

DeSantis Vs. Disney: Florida's Fight Over Private Governance

Image

On April 22, 2022, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill dissolving the Reedy Creek Improvement District, ending perhaps the most successful experiment in private governance in U.S. history. The bill ended an arrangement that turned a swamp on the edges of Orlando into the home of Walt Disney World, one of the busiest tourist destinations on Earth. The governor's victory is not yet final—while the district was formally dissolved earlier this year, Disney attorneys quickly outfoxed DeSantis, delegating many of the district's powers back to the company. The company is now suing to reverse the change altogether.

Florida has two distinct Gulf Coast regions: the panhandle of north Florida and the west coast.
