In some parts of the country, the first weekend in May means fancy hats, mint juleps and the Kentucky Derby. In this part of the country, it means beard contests, pirate invasions and Fernandina Beach's Centre Street packed with Shrimp Festival-goers. You can use the full name if you want (eight flags have flown over Amelia Island in its long history) but just say "shrimp festival" and everyone will know what you're talking about. There's more to it than just shrimp — a pageant, a parade, a 5K run, a beard contest, an ice cream-eating competition, fireworks, a pirate invasion, a shrimp-fleet blessing and, of course, the Swingin' Medallions. The fest opens at 5:30 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. Info: shrimpfestival.com
