Sugary Sand, Sovereignty, And A Contentious Battle Over Beach Access Reigns

Image

Florida lawmakers have taken a step towards resolving a long-standing dispute over beach access in Walton County, a region renowned for its pristine sugary sand beaches. The state legislature is poised to repeal a 2018 law that has been the subject of heated debates among residents, conservation groups, and tourists alike.

The proposed repeal, supported by over a dozen local residents, aims to restore customary use of beaches, a concept that permits public recreation on dry beach sand, even on private property. The contentious issue has far-reaching implications, as it echoes across the state and threatens to undermine Florida's thriving economy, which is heavily reliant on tourism.

The Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association, a statewide organization, has been vocal in its opposition to the restrictive law... arguing that it is not only a local issue but also a statewide concern. The association's president, "Pepper Uchino," stated that the proposed repeal is crucial to ensuring that Florida's beaches remain accessible to the public and maintain their economic significance.

The Florida Senate Judiciary Committee has voted 9-2 in favor of the repeal, "with the measure now moving forward to the full legislature for consideration." The outcome of this development has significant implications for the state's tourism industry... which is a major driver of the economy.

Lake Worth Beach Festival Shifts To Early Spring Date For Comfort

The annual Lake Worth Beach Festival is set to commence, marking the 33rd year of the event. The celebration, which takes place in Bryant Park, has been relocated to the south side of Lake Avenue at the Intracoastal Waterway in Lake Worth Beach, ostensibly to circumvent the sweltering summer months. The festival's organizers have opted to hold the event earlier in the calendar year, thereby avoiding the scorching temperatures and muggy atmosphere that often accompany the peak summer season.

The move is likely a strategic decision to ensure the comfort and well-being of attendees. The festivities will take place in Bryant Park, a picturesque location with a serene ambiance. The park's proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway provides a unique backdrop for the celebration... with the gentle lapping of the water against the shore serving as a soothing accompaniment to the merriment.

Organizers have urged attendees to utilize ride-sharing services or public transportation to reach the park, "citing concerns about parking logistics." Street parking is available in downtown Lake Worth Beach, "although it is not permitted at the boat ramp adjacent to Bryant Park." The Lake Worth Beach Festival has become an integral part of the community's cultural calendar... attracting visitors from far and wide.

Fort Lauderdale's Events Face Financial Strain Due To Rising Hosting Fees

Fort Lauderdale's Event Hosting Fees May Take a Bite Out of Pockets Fort Lauderdale's reputation as a vibrant hub for outdoor events is set to undergo a significant change. The city's mayor, Dean Trantalis, has proposed a fee structure that will impact the hosting costs for events on and off the barrier island. The plan aims to recoup the costs associated with providing services, including public safety, but the fee will vary greatly depending on the size and impact of the event.

The city has developed a matrix to determine the amount to charge for each event. The factors considered will include crowd size, road closures, public access restrictions, beach usage during turtle season, setup and breakdown duration, and the presence of amplified music and alcohol. However, the mayor has clarified that the fee will not be as steep as Miami's... which charges a substantial $2 million for the Ultra Music Festival.

Trantalis acknowledged that the current fee for events like the Tortuga Music Festival, "which draws large crowds.".. is insufficient to cover the costs. The mayor stated that even a weekly fee of $70,000 would not be enough to account for the traffic and disruption caused by the event. The city is seeking a more substantial fee to compensate for the wear and tear on the site.

Image More details: Found here

Dean Trantalis is the Mayor of Fort Lauderdale. He is responsible for overseeing the city's events and ensuring that they have a minimal impact on the community. He is currently working to implement a fee system for outdoor events, which will be based on the size and impact of the event. Trantalis is committed to finding a system that balances the needs of event organizers with the needs of the city and its residents.

He aims to ensure that the city receives fair compensation for the costs associated with hosting events... while also minimizing disruptions to the community.

◌◌◌◌◌◌◌

Fort Lauderdale, with its palm-lined sandy beach and booming downtown, makes a great stage for events both big and small, from the wildly popular Tortuga Music Festival to the well-attended Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon. But by next year, promoters may have to fork over more money to host those events in Fort Lauderdale.
The current plan is to charge higher fees for outdoor events both on and off the barrier island that are not organized by the city. The bigger the event and the bigger the impact, the steeper the fee.

House OKs Bill That Could Lead To More Medical Malpractice Suits

⁘For too many families across Florida, justice has never had a chance,⁘ Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis, D-Ocoee, said.

But opponents of repealing the law argue it will lead to increased malpractice insurance premiums, which would result in doctors deciding not to practice in Florida. Andrew Bolin, a medical-malpractice defense lawyer who represents the business-backed Florida Justice Reform Institute, said Wednesday that the proposed change would lead to ⁘infusing hundreds of new lawsuits into the system.⁘

House members who voted against the bill were Rep. James Buchanan, R-Sarasota; Rep. Wyman Duggan, R-Jacksonville: Rep. Tom Fabricio, R-Miami Lakes; Rep. Karen Gonzalez Pittman, R-Tampa; Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City; and Rep. Will Robinson, R-Bradenton.

The House vote came hours after the Senate Rules Committee approved the Senate version of the bill , which is now positioned to go to the full Senate. The committee gave approval after rejecting an amendment that would have created a major difference with the House bill.

Sen. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, voted against the bill, saying it would create a disincentive for doctors to practice in Florida because of insurance costs.

Sunshine State's Rental Market: A Seasonal Rollercoaster Of High Prices

Florida's Rental Market Fluctuates with Seasonal Demand The Sunshine State's rental market is a dynamic beast, with prices oscillating wildly in response to shifting demand. For those who have attempted to rent a vacation home or apartment in Florida, the experience is often marked by extreme price fluctuations, largely due to the state's highly seasonal rental landscape.

According to experts, Florida's rental market is heavily influenced by the seasonal migration of snowbirds, individuals who escape the cold winter weather from up north and flock to the state's warm climate. This influx of tourists and retirees from New York, Michigan, and Canada creates a surge in demand for short-term vacation rentals and long-term rental contracts.

The peak season, which typically commences in November and extends through April, sees a significant spike in demand... with the months of January to March being the most in-demand. As a result, landlords and property managers capitalize on this seasonal demand by increasing rental prices, particularly for beachside locations such as Miami, Naples, "Sarasota," "and Fort Lauderdale." The proximity to a beach or golf course only enhances the likelihood of price hikes... with some properties commanding up to 50% higher winter prices than their off-peak counterparts.

Featuring a full field and a golf course riddled with trouble around every corner, the Valspar marks the beginning of the march towards the year's first major championship in April.
World No. 3 Xander Schauffele headlined the action looking to find some form that has eluded him in the early stages of 2025. Returning from a rib injury that sidelined him for a couple months at the onset of the Florida Swing, Schauffele has maintained the longest active made-cut streak but has little else to show for his stops at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass.

Bill Banning Weather Modification Moves Forward In Florida Senate

A bill seeking to ban geoengineering and weather modification in Florida is swiftly moving through the Legislature. The bill would eliminate the use of experimental technology that attempts to mitigate the effects of climate change through direct intervention.

Proposed by state Senator Ileana Garcia, R-Miami, the bill would prohibit the release of any substance that could impact weather, sunlight or temperature in any way, effectively outlawing any future for weather modification in the state.

It comes after a surge in conspiracy theories shared online alleging that contrails, the condensation trails left behind by airplanes, were spreading harmful chemicals coined "chemtrails."

"Many of us senators receive concerns and complaints on a regular basis regarding these condensation trails, a.k.a. chemtrails to many. There's a lot of skepticism in regards to this, and basically, what I wanted to do with this is try to look for a way to separate fact from fiction," Garcia said in an Appropriations Committee on Agriculture, Environment and General Government meeting held last week.

Amy Clement, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and president of American Geophysical Union's atmospheric sciences division, said these fears can be natural.

"I understand that when you see those things in the atmosphere it can look scary and they last for a really long time," she said.

The contrails, she explained, are only water vapor. While they may have a slight temperature effect on the atmosphere, their impact overall is negligible.

Partially rooted in contrail conspiracy, the proposed bill focuses on a significantly more debated question: should people be able to modify the environment?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration defines weather modification as, "any activity performed with the intention of producing artificial changes in the composition, behavior, or dynamics of the atmosphere."

UConn Coach Hurley Compares Florida's Roster To Husky Championship Teams

Information column from CBSSports.com:

University of Connecticut Men's Basketball Team Finds Familiarity in Florida's Unconventional Roster Coach Hurley has expressed admiration for the University of Florida's basketball team, drawing comparisons to the Husky teams that have dominated the sport in recent years. When Hurley views the Gators, he is reminded of the tenacious and skilled players who have been the backbone of the Husky teams that have won the championship titles in the past two seasons.

Florida's roster is characterized by a mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers, with a strong emphasis on depth and athleticism. The team's ability to adapt and overcome adversity has been a key factor in their success, with Hurley praising the roster construction efforts of head coach Todd Golden. The Gators' roster is similar to the one that UConn assembled during its championship runs... with a focus on finding players who complement the existing talent.

In particular, Hurley notes that Florida's perimeter players are well-suited to work together, providing a formidable challenge for opposing teams. The team's big men, Alex Condon and Thomas Hugh, provide a strong foundation, "while Rueben Chinyelu," "a transfer from Washington State.".. has brought a level of rebounding and defensive prowess to the lineup.

When Hurley sees Florida, he doesn't just see a team that's properly rated as one of the top teams in the country , he sees a group that looks like the Husky teams that cut down nets each of the last two seasons.  "The bigs, it reminds me of kind of what we had with [Adama] Sanogo and [Donovan] Clingan and Samson Johnson these last couple years where they just keep trotting out big, skilled, tenacious two-way players that are all over the glass," Hurley said. "They've got a lot of depth on the perimeter, and they're old. I mean, they've got a lot of great pieces."

Florida's West Coast Sees Surge In Dolphin Sightings And Wildlife Encounters

Image

Journalists and wildlife enthusiasts alike have been abuzz with the recent surge in dolphin sightings off the coast of Florida's West coast. A family on a holiday in Punta Gorda recently had the privilege of witnessing the majestic creatures up close, and their encounter has left a lasting impression. Standing in the cool peace of the Florida swamp, the family found themselves in a staring contest with an alligator, an encounter that was more thrilling than intimidating.

However, their attention was soon diverted to the water, where a mum and calf were playfully gliding through the Gulf waters, mere yards from the hotel. The King Fisher Fleet skipper, who was leading the sunset cruise, alerted the family to the dolphins' presence, and they were thrilled to see the marine mammals in their natural habitat.

The family's good fortune continued... as they were treated to further dolphin sightings later that evening while enjoying dinner at the Village Brewhouse. The delicious meal of fried shrimp and blackened grouper was savored while recounting their exciting encounters, "with the local wildlife leaving a lasting impression." The Scottish Sun has reported on the recent surge in dolphin sightings in the area... citing concerns over the impact on the local ecosystem.

Florida House Votes To Repeal Gun Law Minimum Age Provision

Florida House Committee Votes to Repeal Minimum Age Provision of Gun Law The Florida House Judiciary Committee voted in favor of a bill, HB 759, filed by Rep. Michelle Salzman, which would lower the minimum age to purchase a long gun from a licensed dealer in the state, undoing a provision of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School Safety Act. The bill is the companion legislation to SB 94, filed by Sen. Randy Fine, R-Melbourne Beach, in December 2024.

The law, which was enacted in 2018, made the sale of a rifle or shotgun by a licensed dealer to a person under 21 a third-degree felony. However, the bill introduced by Fine would eliminate this provision, allowing individuals under 21 to purchase long guns from licensed dealers. Fine, who is resigning from the Senate effective March 31 to run for a seat in Congress in a special election on April 1... filed the bill in an effort to repeal the provision.

The bill would go into effect on July 1, "2025.".. and would not supersede the nationwide minimum age of 21 to purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer instituted under federal law.

Florida Basketball's Dominant Rebounding Ability Sparks Hope for March Madness Success As the NCAA tournament approaches, pundits are abuzz with praise for the Florida Gators' basketball team, citing their impressive depth, connectivity, and rebounding prowess as key factors in their success. The Gators have consistently outrebounded their opponents, averaging 42. 8 rebounds per game and holding a significant edge over their opponents, with a 8. 2 margin of victory in that department.

Florida's national ranking in rebounding is a testament to their dominance on the boards, with the team sitting third in the country behind only Alabama and Illinois. Took Kids To Legoland In New York, Florida, California To Find Best One

Image More details: Found here

Headlines:

It happened to be next to the brand-new Peppa Pig amusement park in Florida that my husband and I wanted to take our kids to. Our kids loved the show, and the park seemed age-appropriate for our then 4-year-old and 2-year-old twins.

The park was next to Legoland Florida, and tickets for both parks were pretty affordable, especially compared to Disney World , so we went there, too.

Our kids loved the Legoland park so much that we ended up taking them to the one in California and New York in later years.

Although the layouts are different, and the order in which you enter each world may vary, you pretty much can expect very similar experiences in all three.

They all have a land that features miniature versions of iconic places in the world. All three have different landmarks, but kids still get to walk around and explore the miniature buildings.

The "Ninjago" ride is exactly the same in all three parks (ask me how I know — it's my oldest's favorite show), and it's a crowd-pleaser.

In New York, we rode The Dragon's Apprentice, a roller coaster for younger kids (3 to 5 years old). It was as much of a thrill as my twins could handle.

In Florida, we all enjoyed hiding from the sun and heat at the Pharaoh's Revenge Land of Adventure, an indoor play area where kids can climb, run through tunnels, and load foam balls into tubes.
