Florida State Park Controversy

The Florida Park Service mission aims to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring natural and cultural resources. This mission is not fulfilled by construction of golf courses, pickleball courts, and 350-room hotels in state parks. The Jonathan Dickinson State Park golf controversy has been marred by shadiness... with details still unclear months later.

With the Nov. 5 election behind us, let us celebrate an important aspect of our lives as Floridians and a vital component of our state's tourism economy — our award-winning Florida state parks.  The recent state park debacle in which several parks were slated for golf courses, pickleball courts and 350-room hotels, revealed the love and protective instincts people have for our parks. Thousands joined together in protest along with a near unanimous bipartisan chorus of local, state and federal elected officials.

Pier Sixty-Six Resort Undergoes $1 Billion Revitalization In Fort Lauderdale

Historic Pier Sixty-Six Resort Undergoes Revitalization to Cater to a New Generation of Enthusiasts Pier Sixty-Six, a legendary resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is being reborn with the addition of luxe, for-sale residences as part of a $1 billion revitalization project. This marked shift comes 75 years after the term "mid-century modern" was coined, a style that has gained significant popularity among a new generation of enthusiasts.

The revitalization of Pier Sixty-Six marks the beginning of a new era for the landmark property, paying homage to the defining decades that have shaped it, according to Colm O'Callaghan, vice president and managing director of Pier Sixty-Six Resort. Notably, the Pier Sixty-Six gas station was unveiled in 1957, the same year that saw the launch of Sputnik... marking the beginning of the Space Age. This historic timing serves as a fitting tribute to the resort's unique heritage.

The Residences at Pier Sixty-Six will offer an exclusive collection of 92 private homes located within a pair of 11-story condominium structures and a combination of four-story resort residential buildings designed by renowned architect Garcia Stromberg. The property's iconic spire tower, inspired by the Googie architecture style, is being fully restored to preserve its place in Fort Lauderdale's heritage. The building's crowning trihedrons pay homage to the innovative design and V-shaped... Gull-wing canopies of late 1950s- and '60s-era Phillips 66 stations nationwide.

According to Pierce Publishing, the design of the iconic spire tower made its first appearance at Pier Sixty-Six. As reported by Forbes, the revitalization of Pier Sixty-Six is not unique, as two other historic South Florida hotels, the Shore Club and The Raleigh, have undergone similar transformations. Both Miami Beach-based hotels have had their glorious heritage preserved while incorporating luxury residences within their footprints for the first time.

The $1 billion revitalization project aims to deliver its first-ever luxury residences, "setting a new standard for the property." With its rich history and stunning architecture, Pier Sixty-Six is poised to attract a new wave of devotees who appreciate the allure of mid-century modern design. The successful revitalization of this iconic resort is a testament to its enduring appeal, "which transcends generations."

Some 75 years after the term was coined, mid-century modern architecture and design has been embraced by a new generation of enthusiasts, a cohort enthralled by a motif that had its genesis in the near-limitless optimism of the American post-war period. Now, that legendary resort is being reborn, with the addition of luxe, for-sale residences. "The revitalization of Pier Sixty-Six marks the dawn of a new era for the landmark property, just as much as it is a celebration of the defining decades that have shaped it," says Colm O'Callaghan, vice president and managing director of Pier Sixty-Six Resort.

Florida State Senators Have Started Filing Bills For 2025.

Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, and House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, officially took over as leaders of their respective chambers for the next two years during an organizational session last week.

House and Senate committees will meet in parts of December, January and February to start sifting through proposals in the lead-up to the 60-day session.

— A proposal (SB 56) seeking to prohibit the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or an apparatus into the atmosphere "for the express purpose of affecting the temperature, the weather, or the intensity of sunlight."

The measures filed in the past week by Sens. Ileana Garcia, R-Miami, Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Doral, and Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, aren't the first bills that were filed for the upcoming session that begins March 4.

The proposals, known as "claim" bills, are needed, at least in part, because of a state sovereign-immunity law that generally limits the amounts of money government agencies can be forced to pay in lawsuits to $200,000 or $300,000, depending on how many people are involved. Claim bills allow payments that are higher than the limits.

South Florida Girl Receives Magical Moana-themed Bionic Arm Cover

A 12-year-old girl from Cape Coral received a custom-designed Moana-themed cover for her bionic arm in Orlando on Tuesday.

"I can turn it on to show you how it works. It's way easier putting it on without the cover," Eloise Bayliss explained.

"Right here are the sensors. They, like, detect emotion, so I can do this. I can also move the finger individually."

"I'm thankful to have a wonderful insurance plan through my employer. I struck gold with that. Some of them don't cover that, and this is a $30,000 arm," Eloise's mother, Elizabeth Bayliss, explained.

She's even more thankful that on Tuesday, Eloise got an early Thanksgiving surprise — an exclusive custom-designed "Moana 2" cover for her arm.

"Here's another one, Wolverine. The Hero Arm product was launched in 2018, and the whole idea behind it is to make kids of all ages and adults feel like heroes."

"Yeah, and you can definitely see that in Eloise. Her confidence has just soared since the time that I first met her till now, and I love the way she talks about how the Hero Arm has made her more confident," said Emily Shannon, an upper limb prosthetist at Open Bionics.

Florida Football Surging At End Of Year Three Under Billy Napier As FSU Stumbles

This time a year ago, Florida football coach Billy Napier was in the midst of a five-game losing streak to close in the 2023 season. Recruits were de-committing. Fan patience was wearing thin.

Fast-forward a year and times have changed. Napier has the Florida Gators (6-5, 4-4 SEC) on an upswing after positing back-to-back wins over ranked teams (No. 22 LSU and No. 9 Ole Miss) for the first time since 2018. Meanwhile, Florida State, after losing 10 players to the NFL Draft from a team that finished 13-1, has stumbled to a 2-9 record in year five under Norvell.

As a result, Florida enters its rivalry matchup at Florida State on Saturday night (7 p.m., ESPN2) as 14.5-point favorites, per BetMGM .

When asked about FSU's dramatic decline in the span of 12 months, Napier responded: "I have my own grass to mow. My yard is big, has a lot of weeds in it. I have my own issues. I don't necessarily think it would be right for me to comment on that.

"Look, I understand all the things that come with the job. Job's probably more challenging than it's ever been. I have a ton of respect for Mike. He's a good football coach. I think we're trying to get the Florida Gators better. That's my focus."

Florida football is starting to turn the corner in year three under Napier, just the way FSU did for Norvell in his third season two seasons ago.

The Seminoles started the 2022 season 4-3 before reeling off six straight wins, capped by a 35-32 win over Oklahoma in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando.

Florida's Small Business Owners Seek Tax Relief Amid Economic Recovery

Florida's Small Business Owners Seek Relief from Tax Burden Amidst Ongoing Recovery Efforts As the state of Florida continues to recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, small business owners are struggling to stay afloat amidst the economic downturn. One such business is the Fantastic Sams Cut & Color hair salon franchises in Sarasota, North Port, and Bradenton, which have been a staple in the community for years.

These locally-owned salons have built a reputation for providing exceptional service and a sense of community to their customers. However, with the recent surge in expenses and reduced consumer spending, owners are finding it increasingly challenging to remain viable. The salons have taken a significant hit... not only from the direct impact of the hurricanes but also from the ongoing economic struggles.

One of the key factors affecting the salons' bottom line is the current tax code, which imposes a hefty burden on businesses that rely heavily on tips. According to a study by the IRS, every $20 in tips imposed about $2 in costs on the hair salon, which can quickly add up to thousands of dollars in taxes on untaxed income.

This issue is not unique to the hair industry, as many small businesses that rely on tips, such as restaurants and bars, also face similar challenges. In the past, "Congress has shown its willingness to address these issues.".. as evidenced by the FICA tax credit for restaurants that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1992.

This credit allowed restaurants to reduce their costs by allowing employees to earn a greater share of their income from tips. The owners of the Fantastic Sams Cut & Color salons are urging Congress to revisit this issue and provide fairness in the tax code for businesses like theirs. By doing so, they believe it would provide a much-needed boost to the local economy and help small businesses like theirs recover and rebuild.

As reported by the Tampa Bay Times, "the current tax code is unfair to small businesses that rely on tips, and its relief is urgently needed to help these businesses recover from the devastating impact of the hurricane season." The owners of the Fantastic Sams Cut & Color salons agree, "and they are calling on Congress to take action to address this critical issue."

Videos were created showing them engaging in commercial sex acts, which then garnered more than 167,000 views on Twitter (now known as X).

It was 2021 when Lisa Haba, attorney at The Haba Law Firm, filed a federal lawsuit against the company on behalf of the brothers.

The National Human Trafficking Hotline ranks Florida third behind California and Texas when it comes to the reported number of cases of human trafficking, defined as the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain commercial sex or a labor act.

Olivia Littleton, a local human trafficking survivor, sat down with WESH 2 to share her story earlier this year.

Haba jumped in to take action against hotels and she believes are turning a blind eye to sex trafficking.

"I got to the point where I couldn't even make basic decisions for myself. I felt like I had no idea how to even pick what I wanted to eat for dinner because every decision that he possibly could control was controlled over me," Littleton said when she shared her story, which resonated with Haba.

Florida Issues New Guidance On Fluoride In Drinking Water

Florida's State Surgeon General issued a recommendation against community water fluoridation due to neuropsychiatric risks.

Fluoride is naturally found in groundwater, fresh and saltwater as well as foods and soils. Community water fluoridation adjusts the amount of fluoride in drinking water to a level that will prevent tooth decay.

The fluoridation of U.S. water began in 1945, but recommended levels have since been lowered because of health risks.

Self-reported data from 2023 estimate that over 70 percent of Florida residents on community water systems receive fluoridated water, according to Ladapo. The CDC does not mandate community water fluoridation, but it says it is "one of 10 great public health interventions of the 20th century."

Ladapo listed a September US District Court ruling that found community water fluoridation at .7 milligrams per liter "presents an unreasonable risk to health under the Amended Toxic Substance Control Act."

The proliferation of wave pools and surf parks has become a prominent feature in the entertainment and recreation industry. Among these attractions, Surf Lakes, an Australian company, stands out for its visually striking and aesthetically unique technology. The company's massive, rust-colored plunger, referred to as the Central Wave Device (CWD), displaces water and creates concentric swell lines, offering a distinctive surfing experience.

In a significant development, Tony Miller, the visionary behind Peak Surf Park, has announced plans to construct a massive surf-focused attraction in Pasco County, Florida. The park, slated to open in late 2027, will be situated within the 6,000-acre master-planned development, Two Rivers. The location, which Miller secured after nearly two years of searching... provides easy access to residents across Tampa Bay and West Central Florida's coast. Peak Surf Park promises to revolutionize the region by combining surf culture, entertainment, and ___style amenities.

The park's world-class waves and unforgettable experiences are expected to attract visitors from across the country. Interestingly, the technology used by Surf Lakes is unlike any other pool out there. The CWD displaces water to create concentric swell lines using a hydraulic → pneumatic system. The system works by lifting and dropping the CWD using compressed air... which is pushed through a U-Tube. The process takes approximately six seconds and is repeated multiple times to create a set of waves.

After each set, "the compressed air recharges for the next set." This innovative technology has the potential to transform the surfing experience. While the Florida Surf Lakes location is still under development, "the potential open date is set for 2027." Further information about Peak Surf Park can be accessed through the company's website.

Florida Lawmakers Urge Urgent Action On Insurance, Condo Issues

Image

Recent comments by lawmakers in Florida have sparked controversy and debate on issues affecting the state's residents. According to WLRN, outgoing state Representative Chris Perez emphasized the need for insurance laws to be rewritten, citing the challenges faced by Floridians due to frequent hurricanes. Perez pointed out that while Floridians are indeed realistic and understand that there are trade-offs, they also expect to own their homes, start businesses without bureaucratic hurdles, and have access to quality healthcare and education.

Perez's remarks were met with support from outgoing state Representative Dianne Harrison Garrison, who acknowledged the burdens faced by those affected by recent natural disasters... including hurricanes and tornadoes. Garrison emphasized the need for lawmakers to address the escalating property insurance affordability crisis and condominium issues.

Outgoing state Representative Kamia Driskell also addressed the challenges facing the state, "mentioning the devastation caused by back-to-back hurricanes and tornadoes." Driskell's comments highlighted the need for lawmakers to prioritize the concerns of Florida's residents and find solutions to the state's pressing issues.

The remarks by the lawmakers have sparked renewed debate on the importance of addressing the state's insurance laws, "property insurance affordability.".. and condominium issues. The focus on these issues underscores the importance of policymakers creating and implementing effective solutions to address the unique challenges faced by Florida's residents.

Perez is a seasoned policymaker who has dedicated his career to serving the people of Florida. With a deep understanding of the state's unique challenges, he advocates for reliable and affordable insurance solutions that prioritize the needs of Floridians over those of insurance companies. He has worked tirelessly to address the ensuing crises, "including property insurance affordability and condo concerns.".. always striving to ensure that Floridians have access to the services and opportunities they need to thrive.

"In my experience, Floridians are realistic. They understand that there are trade-offs. They understand that in a state battered by hurricanes, insurance will be a challenge," Perez said to lawmakers and other audience members, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, during a post-election organization session. "But they need to know that our state's insurance laws are not being written by and for the insurance companies.
They want to own their own homes, not be tenants to private-equity firms. They want to open up a business without jumping through endless bureaucratic hoops. They want to pick their own doctors and send their kids to good schools."
"He carries a heavy burden, a burden that many of you in this chamber, whose families lost so much and who found hope in our great state, share alongside with him," Garrison said.

In a separate development, investigators are still piecing together the details of a recent string of burglaries in Novi, Michigan.
