Bearded Floridian Sings Parody To Win Hemingway Look-Alike Contest

The 2024 Hemingway Look-Alike Contest, a cornerstone of Key West's annual Hemingway Days festival, concluded on Sunday at Sloppy Joe's Bar. The highlight of the celebration was the crowning of a new winner, a 71-year-old white-bearded man from Florida, who took home the title (CBS News). The annual festival, which ran from Thursday to Sunday, commemorated the 125th anniversary of Ernest Hemingway's birthday on July 21. The Look-Alike Contest, a mainstay of the event, involved preliminary rounds on Thursday and Friday, with the top contestants advancing to the finals on Saturday night.

As part of their routine, the competitors, including Leslaw Jedrysko from Nowy Targ, Poland, paraded across the stage at Sloppy Joe's, reciting lines and waving to the enthusiastic crowd. The judges, all previous contest winners... were impressed by the contestants' performances and overall resemblance to Hemingway.

The winner, Masterson, stood out by singing a theme-oriented parody of Garth Brooks' hit "Friends in Low Places." In a post-contest interview, Masterson credited his outdoorsy upbringing for his Hemingway-esque persona. He recalled that his father, who taught him the ways of hunting and fishing, instilled in him a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Celebrity chef Paula Deen was among the rowdy crowd at Sloppy Joe's, where she watched her husband, Michael Groover... win a look-alike title in 2018. The Hemingway Look-Alike Contest continues to captivate audiences and pay homage to the iconic author's legacy (CBS News). According to CBS News, "the 2024 Hemingway Look-Alike Contest winner is a 71-year-old man from Florida," "who won the title by showcasing his rustic persona and singing a themed parody."
