Fort Lauderdale Residents Seek Improvements Amid Flooding Concerns Residents of Fort Lauderdale's Edgewood neighborhood are still reeling from recent torrential downpours that brought floodwaters to their doors. John Machonis, a homeowner in the area, has experienced four feet of water in his home before, resulting in significant damage and replacement costs.
His neighbor, Tony Schreiber, received a couple of inches of water in his home and appreciated the city's prompt response with pump trucks. However, he wishes the city would take more proactive measures beforehand. The city of Fort Lauderdale has been working to address drainage issues in Edgewood, investing $14. 5 million in a new stormwater pipe.
There are three pumping stations nearby in River Oaks... but only one was operational during the recent flooding. The city's progress report lists ongoing projects aimed at preventing flooding, with Edgewood nearing completion. However, other flood-prone areas, such as the Melrose community west of I-95, are years away from improvements.
In Dania Beach, "the Tiger Tail Business Park is experiencing standing water issues," "despite having a drainage lake that is designed to overflow." Tenants attribute this issue to nearby construction... which is generating significant rainwater runoff that is flooding the lake. This article was first published in CBS News.
