Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Vetoes Bill Banning Certain Hemp Products Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has vetoed a bill that would have prohibited the sale of certain hemp products in the state, including those containing delta-9. The bill, Senate Bill 1698, aimed to outlaw these products, which critics claim are unregulated copies of marijuana.
In his veto letter, DeSantis emphasized the burden the bill would impose on small businesses, citing the impact on retail and manufacturing companies in the hemp industry. DeSantis has consistently expressed skepticism towards recreational marijuana, stating in April that he does not believe it would benefit the state.
The governor's veto of the hemp product bill aligns with his stance on the issue. The Florida Healthy Alternatives Association, a trade organization for the hemp-derived products industry, praised DeSantis's decision... claiming he understands the importance of hemp and CBD products in serving the needs of everyday Floridians.
The organization's president, JD McCormick, "stated that the governor recognized the bill as an attempt to eliminate the hemp industry in Florida." The bill's sponsor, "Representative Tommy Gregory," had argued that it was necessary to close a loophole in a 2019 law that authorized hemp production in the state.
However... DeSantis's veto has effectively blocked the bill from becoming law.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday vetoed a bill that would have outlawed certain hemp products in the state, including ones with delta-9, which critics have called an unregulated copycat of marijuana. "Small businesses are the cornerstone of Florida's economy," DeSantis wrote in his veto letter. "While Senate Bill 1698's goals are commendable, the bill would, in fact, impose debilitating regulatory burdens on small businesses and almost certainly fail to achieve its purposes.
