The Florida House has passed a bill requiring all private employers to use E-Verify for new hires. HB 197, sponsored by Rep. Berny Jacques and Rep. Kiyan Michael, expands a current law that requires public employers and private employers with 25 or more workers to use E-Verify. The bill aims to prevent employment of undocumented immigrants. Rep. Yvonne Hinson raised concerns about the burden on small businesses. Jacques stated, "If this bill passes, it will expose law-breakers harming Floridians and law-abiding people seeking employment.
