Florida's Hindu And South Asian Communities Prepare For Diwali

As Monday, October 20, approaches, Florida's Hindu and South Asian communities are preparing to illuminate their homes and surroundings, marking the beginning of Diwali, the five-day Festival of Lights. This annual celebration, observed by millions worldwide, is a time for prayer, gathering, and feasting with family and friends.

The Hindu American Foundation explains that the light from the lamps used during Diwali symbolizes the inner illumination that can overcome ignorance, represented by darkness. This festive period also signifies the start of the new year in the Hindu calendar and commemorates the year's last rice-crop harvest. Diwali's dates vary each year, as it is based on the Hindu lunar calendar, and can occur between mid-October and mid-November, during the month of Kartik. The five-day celebration is preceded by Dhanteras, a preparation period that begins on Saturday, October 18.
