Florida's Medicaid expansion effort, spearheaded by Florida Decides Healthcare (FDH), has hit a snag. The organization announced it will suspend its bid to qualify for the 2026 ballot and instead aim for 2028. This decision comes in response to a new state law, HB 1205, which has significantly raised costs and imposed stricter rules on ballot initiatives.
Emerson, a representative of FDH, expressed frustration with the sudden changes, likening it to being in the middle of a basketball game when the referees introduce a new four-point line without clarifying its location. He argues that state leadership is to blame for the effort's shift to the next election cycle. Critics, including Governor Ron DeSantis, have voiced concerns that HB 1205 is designed to create hurdles for accessing Florida's ballot. DeSantis stated that these initiatives should not be manipulable in such a way and that the constitution should not be for sale to the highest bidder.
Despite the setback, FDH has made significant progress, collecting over 200,000 petitions, raising $6 million, and assembling a coalition of more than 100 grassroots organizations across Florida.
