As the Florida legislative session approaches, a peculiar proposal has emerged, one that may raise eyebrows among ornithologists and casual birdwatchers alike. A state representative from the Florida Keys has filed HB 11, a bill that seeks to anoint the American flamingo as the official state bird of Florida. According to wplg, this development marks a significant push to rebrand the state's avian identity.
The American flamingo, with its distinctive rose-colored plumage, has indeed become a familiar sight in certain parts of Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission notes that these birds have been observed along much of the state's coast, with a significant concentration in the Everglades, Biscayne Bay, and the Florida Keys. In fact, outside of Hialeah, over 95% of American flamingo observations have occurred within these regions.
Interestingly, the birds have also been spotted in the shallow treatment wetlands created along the northern fringe of the Everglades, a testament to their adaptability. The timing of this proposal is also noteworthy, as American flamingos were observed in greater numbers in the Everglades and Florida Keys following Hurricane Idalia in 2023.
