Local Teenagers Shine Bright In National Spelling Bee Spotlight Suddenly

This year's Scripps National Spelling Bee is set to captivate audiences as 243 talented spellers, including two from Southwest Florida, prepare to take the stage. Among them are 14-year-old Nicasio David from Fort Myers and 13-year-old Sophia Jolie Schoenrock from Marco Island, who are ready to showcase their linguistic prowess.

Sophia Jolie Schoenrock, a 13-year-old student from Marco Island, has an inspiring story to tell. Born in Germany and moved to the United States at the tender age of six, Schoenrock had to overcome the challenge of learning a new language. Seven years later, she has become a participant in the nation's premier spelling competition, a testament to her hard work and dedication.

Schoenrock's academic journey has been impressive, and her love for learning is evident in her interests. She enjoys reading and playing the clarinet... showcasing her artistic side. She is an avid softball player, playing catcher and second baseman for the Naples Select Softball Team. The Scripps National Spelling Bee, now in its 97th year, "will begin with preliminaries on Tuesday," "May 27.".. at 8 a. m.

There will be 12 contestants from Florida among the 243 spellers in the 97th National Spelling Bee . Two contestants have a special tie to Southwest Florida, including one Marco Island student.
