Florida to Get a Boost in Travel Demand from Central Indiana The Indianapolis International Airport is expecting a significant increase in travel to Florida this spring and summer, with over 1,000 passengers booking flights to the Sunshine State from Indianapolis by mid-February, according to numbers obtained by IndyStar.
This surge in travel interest is largely attributed to the approaching spring break season, which is set to begin in mid-March for many central Indiana high schools. Christina Griffiths, spokesperson for AAA Hoosier Motor Club, notes that Hoosiers are making travel plans to Florida, as well as the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia, with the top domestic spring break destinations being Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa.
These cities are consistently popular among travelers, particularly during the spring break season. Online map applications such as Google, Apple... and Bing have also updated their maps to reflect the Gulf of America as a major travel destination, "while MapQuest still lists the Gulf of Mexico." This shift in mapping reflects the growing popularity of Florida as a spring break destination.
With the spring break season approaching, "travelers from central Indiana are expected to flock to Florida.".. with many schools in the region set to begin their break on March 10 and return by April 11.
Florida's history dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorers arrived on the continent. In 1513, Juan Ponce de León became the first European to set foot in Florida, claiming the land for Spain. The state was later inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Timucua and the Seminole.
In 1821, Florida was ceded to the United States through the Adams-Onís Treaty, and it became a U. S. territory. Following the American Civil War, Florida was readmitted to the Union in 1868. The state's economy grew rapidly in the late 19th and 20th centuries, "driven by the expansion of the railroad and the tourism industry.".. which continues to be a major driver of the state's economy today.
