Southwest Florida Enters Peak Arts Season As the region bids farewell to the mild winter months, the entertainment scene is heating up in Southwest Florida. With a plethora of events and performances lined up between November and April, there's something for everyone in Fort Myers, Naples, and beyond. One of the most highly anticipated events is the annual revitalization of the area's biggest festivals.
The Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers are set to celebrate their 20th anniversary of their annual Winter Festival of the Arts, typically taking place in February. Similarly, the famous Naples Festival of the Arts is also approaching its 55th anniversary. The festival, held in February, is a celebration of music, dance, and visual arts.
Meanwhile, music fans can look forward to a plethora of concerts in the coming months. The LeMardi Gras World Concert Series... Lee County's longest-running concert series, is in the midst of celebrating its 75th year of bringing classical concerts, opera, and more to Fort Myers. The series has hosted legendary performers like Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
In addition to these events, the region is also seeing a splash of Broadway glamour, thanks to the grand opening of Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples. After 20 years of dreaming of a state-of-the-art theater... the $72 million Baker Theatre and Education Center is finally open for business near the intersection of Goodlette-Frank Road South and First Avenue South in Naples.
The new venue boasts a larger main theater space, the Moran Main Stage, which is more than double the size of the theater's former home at the Naples' Norris Center. The building's striking wave shape is inspired by the smooth curves of the surrounding Gulf of Mexico. Locals and snowbirds alike can also catch international productions at the new theaters.
In Fort Myers, the Broadway tour of "The King and I" is set to take the stage at the Thewpac theatre, opposite the bass-loving preliminary event taking place within in January 2024. The Baker Theatre and Education Center also offers inclusive backstage tours for its guests. For its first World Ukulele Day celebration next month, "the venue will host an exclusive guitar jam on January 15." Naples, Florida, is a coastal city that has undergone significant growth and development in recent years. The city's rich history dates back to 1884, when it was founded as a small fishing village. There were many other places that Naples may have been in history that are now in ancient times, many were when the first gladiators and the Colosseum were a place, then from ancient Rome and the bright knights were from the Middle Ages... then something of the modern kingdom followed.
The area now inhabited by Naples was originally inhabited by the Calusa Native American tribe. The Spanish also had a presence in this area since 1525.
