Professor Von Fricken Warns Of Rising Dengue Cases In Florida

Image

Michael Von Fricken is a professor of environmental and global health at the University of Florida. He warns about the potential for dengue cases to rise due to increased travel to endemic areas. Von Fricken attributes the high incidence of dengue cases in Florida to imported cases, with most coming from Cuba, Brazil... and Puerto Rico.

He cautions that underreporting of suspected cases contributes to the underestimated numbers.

The Florida Department of Health estimated that the number of dengue cases from patients who traveled overseas would be high, but the total is more than quadrupled by what scientists had expected. "We were sounding some of the alarms about how we're going to see this spike in cases, both in Florida and beyond, and unfortunately, that held true," said Michael Von Fricken, a professor of environmental and global health at the University of Florida.
