Manatees are large, slow-moving mammals that belong to the Sirenia order. They are also known as sea cows due to their herbivorous diet and slow movement underwater. Manatees can grow up to 13 feet (4 meters) in length and weigh up to 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms). Manatees can be found in shallow, warm waters in south Florida and around the Gulf of Mexico.
They are migratory animals, typically traveling from warmer waters in the winter to cooler waters during the summer months to escape the heat. Manatees congregate in large groups in shallow waters, "such as the manatee viewing areas in Apollo Beach.".. during the winter months.

APOLLO BEACH — A thrill runs through the crowd at the sight of a gummy-gray snout, or barnacled back. Bundled in fuzzy jackets and warm hats, people rested their heads in their hands, leaning over the boardwalk waiting on another appearance from the slow-moving creatures.
