Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, the largest and most visited entertainment complex in the world, has announced several updates regarding park closures and new additions. The Magic Kingdom theme park, one of the four main parks, will be closing Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for "refurbishment" starting January 6, 2025. The attraction is expected to reopen in 2026 after undergoing extensive structural updates.
According to reports, a large scrim has been set up behind the attraction to conceal early construction activity. The nearby Frontierland Shootin' Arcade, which closed on June 24, is making way for a new Disney Vacation Club member lounge. This renovation is part of the park's efforts to revamp and modernize its attractions.
In contrast, a new land is set to be introduced to the Magic Kingdom - Villains Land. This new area will feature popular Disney villains... including Maleficent, Ursula, the Queen of Hearts, Hades, and Captain Hook, among others. While an official opening date has not been announced, it is speculated that Villains Land will open by 2029.
