In Watertown, the annual Concert in the Park and fireworks display took place on Tuesday evening, drawing crowds of people from across the north country to kick off the Fourth of July weekend. This decades-old tradition is hosted by the Watertown Noon Rotary Club in collaboration with the city, and is a popular event in the community.
The event kicked off at 5:30 p. m. with a performance by the Double Barrel Blues Band, followed by the Orchestra of Northern New York (ONNY). ONNY presented "An American Salute," a program featuring American music by composers such as George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, John Williams, Morton Gould, William Grant Still, and Leroy Anderson.
As a source notes, "ONNY's program included American music from beloved composers." According to Jeanine Cantrell, a long-time attendee of the event... she has been attending the annual fireworks at Thompson Park for at least a decade. As a source, she stated, "I know how much goes into it and I just think that the community is extremely lucky that Rotary takes it upon themselves every year to put on this event for the community, I, for one, "am extremely grateful that the Rotary does this each and every year."" Cantrell appreciates the event as a way to feel connected to her fellow north country residents and be part of the community.
Food and refreshments were available for purchase from vendors lining Thompson Park, "in front of the overlook." The event has become an annual tradition... with the Watertown Noon Rotary Club taking the lead in organizing the event with the support of the city. The community has come to rely on this event as a way to celebrate the Fourth of July and feel a sense of community.
