The Florida School for Boys at Okeechobee was established in 1955. The school was created to alleviate overcrowding at the Dozier School and some staff were transferred from Dozier to Okeechobee. A federal investigation in the future found "harmful practices" at the Dozier School and it was shut down in 2011.
The Okeechobee School was also closed... but not as a result of the investigation. Over 400 men who attended the schools in the 1900s have come forward to share their experiences. They call themselves the "White House Boys" due to a white structure at the Dozier School where many boys were beaten.
If approved, many of these bills would take effect on July 1. For a full list of laws going into effect next month, click here .
