Florida High Schools Allow Students To Earn Money From NIL

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has approved a measure allowing high school students to earn money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL), a move that could significantly impact the state's high school sports landscape. According to The Palm Beach Post, the new rule, which rewrites FHSAA Policy 9. 9, permits students to earn money from NIL deals, overcoming concerns that this could accelerate recruiting and exacerbate competitive imbalance.

The measure takes effect in time for the 2024-25 season, meaning some Sunshine State high school athletes could begin receiving NIL benefits in months. Under the new rules, students and their parents or guardians are responsible for negotiating any NIL arrangements. The FHSAA rules also prohibit athletes from earning money off NIL while using their school's uniform, "logo," "equipment.".. or similar intellectual or physical properties.

As The Palm Beach Post reports, the new measures also include provisions to prevent schools from using NIL as an enticement for students to attend their program and prohibit students from securing an NIL deal after an in-season transfer without a good cause exemption from the relevant school district. This development could have a significant impact on high school athletics in Florida... and it ⁙⁙⁙ to be seen how schools and athletes will navigate the new NIL landscape.
