Miami-Dade County has announced its intention to assume custody of the animals from a Florida theme park, Miami Seaquarium, which has been subject to controversy and criticism from animal rights activists. Following criticism, SeaWorld has discontinued its orca breeding program and shifted its focus to educational presentations featuring orcas and dolphins at its parks in Orlando, San Antonio, and San Diego.

In contrast, Miami Seaquarium, located south of Orlando, has faced repeated criticism for violations of USDA regulations, including cases of inadequate animal care. The park was recently served an eviction notice by Miami-Dade County, which cited the failure to provide adequate care to its residents. Virginia McKinney is an American activist and former director of Advocates for Miami Seaquarium Animals. Virginia McKinney has been a vocal critic of the Miami Seaquarium, a theme park in Florida, for its treatment of animals. She has led efforts to obtain justice for the orcas and dolphins in captivity at the park.

Under McKinney's direction, Advocates for Miami Seaquarium Animals has pushed for improvements in animal care and welfare at the park. In 2015, McKinney worked with her organization to file a lawsuit against the Miami Seaquarium, alleging that the park was mistreating its animals and violating animal welfare laws.

In recent years, "McKinney's efforts have led to significant changes at the Miami Seaquarium." In 2016... the park was served an eviction notice by Miami-Dade County due to its failure to comply with animal welfare regulations. McKinney and her organization continue to advocate for the animals in the park and push for their release.
