You Won't Believe The Crazy Measures Being Taken

Col. James L. Booth is the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District Commander. He has had a distinguished career in the military, earning multiple commendations for his service. As a commander, he is responsible for overseeing the Army Corps of Engineers' projects in the Jacksonville District, including the Duval County Shore Protection Project.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is a federal agency responsible for water resources and infrastructure. The agency was established in 1775 as the Office of the Superintendent of the Army Engineer Corps and has been involved in numerous significant projects throughout its history, including the construction of the Panama Canal and the Hoover Dam. Duval County is a county located in northeastern Florida.

The county was founded in 1822 and has a population of over 900,000 people. The county seat is Jacksonville... which is the largest city in Florida. Duval County is known for its beautiful beaches, including Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach. Beaches are a natural barrier that protects the mainland from storm surges and tidal flooding.

The movement of beach sand, known as littoral drift, is a natural process that has been occurring for thousands of years. However, human development and construction along the coast has disrupted this process... causing erosion and damage to property. Littoral drift is the process by which beach sand is moved along the coast by the action of waves and currents.

The process involves the longshore current, which carries sand along the coast, "and the rip current," "which carries sand offshore." The movement of sand helps to maintain the shape and size of the beach and provides a natural barrier against storms and tidal flooding. The Duval County Shore Protection Project is a $32 million project that aims to restore and protect 10 miles of beach in Duval County.

The project involves pumping sand onto the beach to replenish sand that has been eroded by natural forces and human activities. The project is expected to be completed within a year and will help to protect the county's beaches from erosion and damage.

FLORIDA SCHOOLS GET A LATER START TIME FOR BETTER SLEEP

Florida is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is known for its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and rich history. Florida has been a popular destination for tourists and vacationers for many years, with many visiting to enjoy its theme parks, such as Disney World and Universal Studios.

Florida is also home to many diverse ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangrove forests, and the Everglades National Park. Governor Ron DeSantis is the current Governor of Florida, having been elected in 2018. Prior to his governorship, DeSantis served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017.

He has been a strong advocate for education and has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving the state's education system. Middle and high schools in Florida are preparing for the upcoming school year... which is expected to start later than usual. While most schools in the state have already ended their academic year, the rest will start on August 12 or August 10 at the earliest.

The later start times for middle and high schools in Florida are a result of recent legislation signed by Governor DeSantis in May 2023. The law requires school districts to develop plans to implement the changes over the next three years, with each district school board working with local groups to develop strategies for successful implementation.

The goal of the later start times is to improve students' sleep habits, mental health... and academic performance. Many experts believe that earlier start times can be detrimental to students' well-being, leading to fatigue, decreased focus, "and poor overall health." Overall, the changes to the school start times in Florida are designed to prioritize students' health and well-being, "and are expected to have a positive impact on their academic and personal success."

While many students are already off for summer vacation around Florida, some are already dreading the return of snooze alarms and sleepy rides back to school in the early morning. We get it — the last thing anyone wants to think about is the next school year when you just finished the last one. But you do have something to look forward: later start times for middle and high schools .

Florida's Future In Sports Betting: Tribe's Gaming Compact On Trial

Image
West Flagler Associates, Ltd. is a real estate investment and development company based in Miami, Florida. The company was founded in 1994 by its president, David R. Chase. West Flagler has developed and managed numerous commercial and residential properties throughout the United States. The Seminole Tribe is a federally recognized Native American tribe that has been a prominent presence in Florida for centuries.

The tribe has a rich history and culture, and has been involved in various commercial and economic endeavors throughout its history. The Seminole Tribe is known for its successful businesses... including its gaming operations. The hub-and-spoke gaming compact is a contract between the Seminole Tribe and the state of Florida that allows the tribe to operate gaming operations in the state.

The compact was signed in 2021 and has been the subject of ongoing legal battles. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) is a federal law that regulates gaming operations on Native American reservations. IGRA requires that gaming operations be conducted in accordance with state and federal laws... and that any such operations must be authorized by a state tribe.

The June 13 Supreme Court hearing will be a significant event in the history of sports betting in Florida. The court is expected to review the legality of the hub-and-spoke gaming compact and the Seminole Tribe's gaming operations. The outcome of the hearing could have significant implications for the future of sports betting in Florida.

Wallach is likely referring to Eric Wallach, "a gaming industry expert who has commented on the Florida sports betting case." Wallach has experience in the gaming industry and has written about the implications of gaming legislation and regulations.

In The News:

West Flagler is calling the legality of the current status of sports betting in Florida ⁘plainly unlawful,⁘ so this dissonance has now made its way all the way to the Supreme Court.⁘

The matter of West Flagler Associates, Ltd., et al, v. Debra Haaland, et al., - otherwise known around the industry as "the Florida sports betting case" - has been ⁘distributed for conference⁘ to the Supreme Court for a June 13 discussion. The Court⁘s nine justices are expected to review the case on that date to decide where things go from there.

In legal terms, West Flagler has filed a petition of certiorari, which essentially asks the Supreme Court to review a lower court⁘s decision.

Legal sports betting in Florida only exists because of the ⁘hub-and-spoke⁘ gaming compact which granted exclusive rights to the Seminole Tribe to establish statewide online sports betting platforms. Hard Rock Bet fully launched in December despite ongoing legal battles at various levels of the federal and state legal systems challenging whether the hub-and-spoke facet of the compact allowing off-reservation bets wired through tribal servers actually meets the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).

Both sides of this case have previously asked the Supreme Court to shut down the other⁘s petition, so the June 13 session will move the needle in one direction or another.

Wallach took to X to lay out what he thinks are the most likely possibilities following June 13⁘s discussion:

Large Asian Water Monitor Lizard Spotted In Southwest Florida

Image
A Large Asian Water Monitor Lizard Spotted in Southwest Florida A recent sighting of a large lizard near a street in Southwest Florida has raised concerns about nonnative species in the area. According to a video posted to Facebook by Renee Aland, the lizard is believed to be an Asian water monitor, which is a nonnative species.

The video, recorded last Monday, shows the lizard walking into a wooded area away from the street. Aland reports that the lizard was around 5 feet long and was seen coming out of the woods near a canal on Hillsboro Blvd, behind the Kia dealership and south of Bamboo Rd. Aland, who first spotted the lizard on Hillsboro Blvd, waited to see it again and eventually reported the sighting to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). In an email to Newsweek on Tuesday... the FWC confirmed that biologists from their Nonnative Fish and Wildlife Program identified the lizard as a nonnative monitor lizard (Varanus sp.). The program's director highlighted the importance of reporting sightings of nonnative species, citing the potential threat they pose to native ecosystems.

As the FWC's Nonnative Fish and Wildlife Program continues to investigate the sighting... residents in the area are advised to keep a lookout for the large reptile. Newsweek reports that the FWC has issued a statement urging residents to contact them if they spot any unusual or nonnative species. The sighting has raised concerns about the potential impact of nonnative species on the native wildlife and ecosystems of Southwest Florida.

According to the FWC, "nonnative species can outcompete native species for food and habitat," "leading to declines in native populations." The agency is working to educate the public on the importance of reporting sightings of nonnative species and the potential risks they pose.

Sophie Savidge, a 16-year-old junior at Mason Classical Academy in Naples, Florida, was denied entry to her school's prom on May 11 after wearing a suit to the event. Sophie's mother, Holly, said that when they arrived at the Vanderbilt Country Club, the vice principal cited the school's dress code requiring students to wear dresses, and not allowed Sophie to enter.

This was despite Sophie having worn suits to previous events, including a Valentine's Day dance in February. Holly Savidge reported feeling upset and shocked by the decision, and was unable to argue the point with the vice principal. She did, however, "do some research and found a relevant court decision from 2022.".. in which the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a charter school's dress code requiring girls to wear skirts and prohibiting them from wearing pants violated Title IX's prohibitions on sex discrimination.

Florida Woman Sues Disney Over Water Slide Brain Injury

A Florida woman is suing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts after a water slide accident allegedly left her with a brain injury and a bleeding wound. According to the lawsuit filed at a circuit court in Orange County, Florida, the incident occurred on May 11. The plaintiff alleges that she was riding the Crush 'n Gusher attraction at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park when something went wrong.

Fox Business reports that the lawsuit claims that the woman and her fiancé were told by attendants that ___guards were not immediately available and would need to be called. The couple reportedly waited for around 10 minutes before calling for help. Fox Business also notes that the plaintiff is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

It's not clear what exactly caused the mishap... but the lawsuit implies that Disney was negligent in its maintenance and operations of the water slide. Disney has not publicly commented on the lawsuit, but the incident has raised concerns about safety at its water parks. The amusement park giant has faced numerous lawsuits over the years, many of which have resulted in significant settlements.

As Disney prepares to launch its highly anticipated Splash Mountain replacement, Tiana's Bayou Adventure... the company has released a "Know Before You Go" guide to help visitors prepare for their visit. The guide provides important safety information and tips for riders. The lawsuit alleges that Disney failed to properly maintain the water slide and provide adequate supervision, leading to the woman's injury. The outcome of the case will depend on various factors, "including Disney's response and any evidence presented during the trial." In the meantime, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following safety rules and guidelines at amusement parks, "including water parks."

With nearly 200 state parks and thousands of miles of trails, there's no shortage of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.

From historic sites like the Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park in Flagler Beach to natural wonders like Silver Springs State Park in Marion County, Florida's state parks offer a diverse range of attractions. But with free admission, visitors can now explore these destinations without the burden of an entrance fee. According to WKMG... The move is sure to be a hit with families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone looking to get a taste of Florida's natural beauty. However, visitors to some of the more popular springs may want to plan ahead. As WKMG notes, parks like Blue Springs, De Leon Springs, and Wekiwa Springs are likely to draw large crowds this summer.

But with the free admission, it's an opportunity to experience these unique spaces without breaking the bank. Florida's state parks offer a range of activities, from hiking and biking to swimming and picnicking. And with the great weather and stunning natural scenery... there's no better time to get outside and make some memories.

So pack a picnic, grab the sunscreen, and head on out to a Florida state park. With free admission all summer long, there's no excuse not to explore the natural beauty that Florida has to offer. DeSantis bans rainbow colors on Florida bridges ahead of Pride Month | The Independent

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis doesn't want the Sunshine Skyway Bridge lit up in rainbow colors for Pride Month – and instead it will be illuminated in red, white and blue.

The 429ft, four mile-long bridge spans Lower Tampa Bay to connect Pinellas County to Manatee County .

With June marking Pride Month , LGBTQ communities are set to be celebrated around the world. Sunshine Skyway Bridge's 1,800 LED lights are typically lit up in rainbow colours that month.

But plans to shine a light on the event using the Sunshine State's flagship bridge have been stymied by Mr DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation.

Ron DeSantis targets Pride Month by limiting colored lights on bridges

Like most American patriots, I live in constant fear of seeing a bridge or causeway lit up in colors other than red, white and blue.

Nothing says freedom quite like telling people they can only use three government-approved colors! This is America, people. We can't just light up our infrastructure in whatever colors we want. That would be hue socialism.

Freedom from having to look at any lights that might not make me think of the American flag, or the American-flag-themed T-shirt with the eagle on it I got on Amazon.

As soon as this great news was announced, the libs got all bent out of shape just because the state-ordered ban on certain colors happens to coincidentally and by total accident overlap with Pride Month in June .

Florida Bill Aims To Increase Transparency In Homeowners' Associations

Image
According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, House Bill 1203 has been sent to Governor DeSantis for review, aiming to increase transparency and accountability within homeowners' associations (HOAs). The bill proposes several changes, including educational requirements for community managers, improved record-keeping, and regulations on what HOAs can fine or suspend residents for. Brian Bokor, a residential property appraiser in Hillsborough County, believes that the bill is a step towards standardization among HOAs, as different communities have varying levels of rules and regulations.

Bokor notes that some HOAs are strict about their guidelines, while others are more lenient. He suggests that the less strict communities may be outliers, as many residents recognize the benefits of having an HOA, such as maintaining community standards and conformity. The bill addresses issues related to work vehicles... as first responders often struggle to find parking spaces within HOA-controlled properties. The bill makes record-keeping a legal requirement, emphasizing the importance of accountability within HOAs.

Under the new law, board members will be required to take a course to educate themselves about their responsibilities and the rules governing their role, replacing the previous certification process. This development may bring a sense of relief to residents who have faced issues with their HOAs, including disputes over fines, "suspensions.".. and record-keeping. The passage of House Bill 1203 could lead to a more unified and transparent approach to HOA management, "ultimately benefiting homeowners and the community as a whole."

People can pay hundreds of dollars into their HOA, and House Bill 1203 looks to build some transparency and responsibility with proposed changes. The bill made it to DeSantis on Tuesday. ⁘I think this is a way of getting all the HOAs on the same page,⁘ said Brian Bokor, a residential property appraiser in Hillsborough County .

Florida Schools To Start Later, Sales Tax Holiday Planned

Title: Florida Schools to Start Later, Sales Tax Holiday Planned In a move aimed at improving students' sleep and overall well-being, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a law requiring later start times for middle and high schools across the state. The new legislation prohibits middle schools from beginning the instructional day before 8 a.m., while high schools will be barred from starting earlier than 8:30 a.m. This change is expected to have a significant impact on millions of students, teachers, and families in Florida.

The decision to push back school start times is based on growing evidence that later start times can have numerous benefits, including improved academic performance, increased alertness, and better overall health. As the new school year approaches... Florida schools are preparing to implement the new schedule. Almost every school will start the 2024-2025 school year on the first possible date – August 12 – after August 10, which falls on a Saturday.

This will give schools and families some extra time to adjust to the new schedule. In addition to the later start times, the state government is also planning a 14-day sales tax holiday from July 29 to August 11, 2024. During this period, residents can purchase certain items tax-free, including clothing and footwear costing $100 or less, school supplies costing $50 or less, learning aids costing $30 or less, and personal computers or computer-related accessories, "including non-recreational software.".. costing $1,500 or less.

USA TODAY reports that this sales tax holiday is expected to provide significant savings for families preparing for the new school year. With the added benefit of later start times, "students in Florida can look forward to a fresher and more focused start to their school year."
