Florida Ports See A Boost In Cargo And Cruise Traffic

Image
Florida ports have seen a significant increase in cargo and cruise traffic in 2023, according to the annual Seaport Mission Plan by the Florida Ports Council. The report shows that 10 port facilities handled 114.25 million tons of cargo, up 1.5% from the previous year's record of 112.5 million tons. This growth can be attributed to the global supply chain issues and the desire of people to travel as COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were lifted.

Florida Ports Council President and CEO Mike Rubin attributed the increase in cargo traffic to the port's strategic efforts to attract vessels. "We have purposely gone out and told vessels to change their course and to pick Florida as their destination for cargo. And they have," Rubin said. Additionally, Florida's proximity to global conflicts in areas such as the Middle East has also contributed to the increase in cargo traffic.

Rubin noted that shipping companies such as Maersk and CMA CGM are bypassing hotspots in areas such as the Suez Canal, the Panama Canal, or around Cape Horn to reach Florida.

Meanwhile, seven
Cargo and cruise traffic hit record highs last year at Florida seaports, which took advantage of global supply-chain issues and a desire by people to travel as COVID-19 pandemic restrictions waned, according to an industry report released Wednesday.

Discussion:

Another person involved in the topic of Florida ports seeing a boost in cargo and cruise traffic is Maersk, a global shipping company. According to Mike Rubin, the President and CEO of the Florida Ports Council, Maersk and other shipping companies are changing their routes to avoid global conflicts in areas such as the Middle East, and Florida is benefiting from this shift.

"We are either the first stop or one of the last stops when that vessel is dropping off its cargo. And that's good to see. I think we've proven that Florida is the place to seize the opportunity for your cargo growth," Rubin said.

Another person involved in the topic is CMA CGM, another global shipping company.

According to Rubin, CMA CGM and other shipping companies are coming out of either the Suez Canal, the Panama Canal or around Cape Horn, to avoid some of those (global) hotspots.

Additionally, the cruise industry is also involved in the topic. According to the Florida Ports Council, seven Florida ports counted 19.4 million cruise passengers last year, topping the previous record by more than 1 million people.

However, the good news is that the cold snap is expected to give way to a mild day, with highs in the mid-60s to low 70s. This change in weather is due to a shift in the pattern of atmospheric pressure, which is bringing warmer air from the south.

While the mild weather is welcome news for many, some are wondering when the pattern will change again. The answer to this question depends on a number of factors, including the strength of the high pressure system currently in place and the movement of other weather systems in the region. According to meteorologists, the current pattern is expected to persist for at least the next few days, but it's possible that it could change as soon as tomorrow or the next day.

Any South Florida Events, Venues With Access For The Disabled?

Image
Chuck had assumed that all public venues in the United States were required to provide access for people with disabilities, but he learned that this is not always the case. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets standards for public accommodations, such as restaurants and movie theaters, but it only applies to new construction and does not require existing facilities to remove barriers without significant difficulty or expense.

To find out if a particular venue is accessible, Chuck called several sites in southern Palm Beach County and northern Broward County and was told that most sites are accustomed to hearing this question and are willing to accommodate people using walkers. He found that some venues have ramps, lower reading rails, and easy parking, making them accessible for people with disabilities.

The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum is one such venue. Located in the old Town Hall building, which was designed by architect Addison Mizner, the museum has a ramp from the parking lot into the building and paved pathways. The museum also has a lower reading rail for the timeline exhibit in the hall [+]
A: Chuck, I had always assumed access for the disabled was a basic legal requirement all over the United States. But after getting your question, I started researching and learned how wrong I was. I remember when the landmark Americans for Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, but now know it sets standards for public accommodations, such as restaurants and movie theaters, mostly for new construction, and requires existing facilities to remove barriers only when it’s easy and won’t cost them too much.

Comments on: Any South Florida Events, Venues With Access For The Disabled?

Chuck, I'm glad you asked! Accessibility for individuals with disabilities is a crucial aspect of creating an inclusive and welcoming environment in South Florida. While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets standards for public accommodations, including restaurants and movie theaters, it's important to note that existing facilities are only required to remove barriers when it's easy and won't cost them too much.

This means that it's essential to do your research and check the accessibility features of a venue before visiting.

I contacted several sites in southern Palm Beach County and northern Broward County to inquire about their accessibility for individuals using walkers. Most sites were accustomed to hearing this question and assured me that they would accommodate your wife without any impediments.

For sedentary activities, you may enjoy art classes at the Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum, located at 71 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton; 561-395-6766; bocahistory.org. 932 Manatees Showed Up At A Florida Park: Here’s Why

Here's Why":

According to park manager Dustin Allen, it's always exciting to see manatees taking refuge in the spring run at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Florida, regardless of the number. On January 21, two park rangers counted 932 manatees at the park, breaking the previous record of 736 from the previous day. The January 21 manatee meetup is particularly special considering the history of the mammals at the park.

In the 1970s, the park's count was around 36 manatees when research began, and the park's record was 729 manatees in January 2023.

To put the number of manatees at Blue Spring on January 21 into perspective, consider that an average adult manatee weighs around 1,000 pounds. Multiplying that by the number of animals counted and accounting for youngsters, it still works out to over 400 tons of man [+]

Comments on: Bill Would Regulate Short-term Vacation Rentals

Here's a response to the topic "Bill Would Regulate Short-term Vacation Rentals":

As the world becomes more interconnected, the demand for short-term vacation rentals has grown significantly. Platforms like Airbnb and VRBO have made it easier than ever for travelers to find unique and authentic accommodations in various locations around the world.

However, this growth has also raised concerns about safety, security, and the impact on local communities.

A new bill proposed in several states aims to regulate short-term vacation rentals by requiring hosts to obtain a license and pay a fee, as well as comply with certain safety and security standards. This would help to ensure that guests have a safe and comfortable experience, while also protecting hosts from potential legal issues.

While some argue that this bill would stifle innovation and limit the ability of hosts to earn extra income, others see it as a necessary step to address the growing pains of the short-term vacation rental industry. As the industry continues to evolve, it's important to find a balance between protecting guests and hosts, while also ens [+]

932 Manatees Showed Up At A Florida Park: Here’s Why

In Orange City, Florida, a remarkable sight greeted park rangers on January 21: 932 manatees congregating at Blue Spring State Park. This staggering number shattered the previous record of 736 manatees set just a day earlier. To confirm the count, two rangers conducted independent observations from various viewing spots, and their tallies matched.

According to park manager Dustin Allen, "Whether there's five manatees or 900, it's always thrilling to see them taking refuge in the spring run."

The manatee gathering at Blue Spring has been a recurring phenomenon. In the 1970s, when research began, the park's count was around 36 manatees. In 2023, the park set a new record with 729 manatees.

*932 manatees at Blue Spring State Park? That's truly astounding! It's incredible to think about the sheer number of these magnificent creatures that gathered at the park on that day. It's fascinating to consider the weight of these animals, with adult manatees weighing around 1,000 pounds on average. Multiply that by the number of manatees at the park, and you get an impressive total of over 400 tons of manatees hanging out together!

As Amanda Kooser notes in her article for Forbes, the January 21 manatee meetup is particularly special when considering the history of the mammals at the park.

Winter In Florida Has Been Crazy Different. Here’s How The Rest Of The Season Will Play Out

Winter in Florida has been anything but typical this year, with limited sunshine, frequent rain, and stormy days. This is due to the presence of El Niño, which has led to a more active subtropical jet stream and more clouds and rainy days. El Niño is expected to stick around for the remainder of winter, so these impacts will continue.

For example, a recent blast of Arctic air is a result of a weak jet stream, which is measured by the Arctic Oscillation, currently in its negative phase. In the coming days, beyond January 23, indications are that the polar jet stream will strengthen and send the frigid air back to Canada, while high pressure builds over the southwest Atlantic and Caribbean, pumping in warmer air. As a result, temperatures in Florida should return to normal and even swing back into the other direction, with above-average temperatures.

This pattern change is further supported by the phase of the Madden-Julien Oscillation, which is a disturbance of clouds, rainfall, and pressure that moves east around the globe near the equator. When the MJO enters phases [+]

Comments on: Winter In Florida Has Been Crazy Different. Here's How The Rest Of The Season Will Play Out

As the winter season continues, Florida residents and visitors alike have been experiencing a dramatic departure from the norm. Limited sunshine, frequent rain and stormy days, and colder-than-normal temperatures have been the order of the day. And according to experts, this trend is likely to continue for the remainder of the season.

The reason for this unusual weather pattern is the presence of El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon that affects global weather patterns. When El Niño is around, the subtropical jet stream is more active, leading to more clouds and rainy days. And as it turns out, El Niño is expected to stick around for the remainder of winter, so the impacts brought on by the phenomenon will continue to be felt.

One of the key indicators of El Niño's influence is the Arctic Oscillation, which is currently in its negative phase. This means that the polar jet stream is weaker, allowing frigid air from Canada to move southward. However, things are about to change. According to forecasters, the polar jet stream will strengthen in the coming days, sending the cold air back to Canada. At the same [+]

Florida Legislators Should Stop The LGBTQ Cheap Shots

Staff inbox: Florida Legislators Should Stop The LGBTQ Cheap Shots:

As Florida legislators work on hundreds of bills in the 2024 session, they ought to ask themselves some threshold questions every time they debate a bill. Are we dealing with something worthy of a grown-up's attention, or am I just posturing for the voters back home? The 60-day lawmaking session that convened January 9 has plenty of serious business to discuss. There are matters of homeowners insurance, education, health care, and public safety, to name just a few. These require varying degrees of hard work and expenditure of tax money, and they're often not glamorous. If a cop is puzzled by the information on a license, a couple of questions can straighten it out—"Yeah, that's an old picture, and that was my name when I was a guy." O Responsible For Rainy Winter In Southwest Florida

El Niño, a natural climate pattern, is responsible for the rainy winter in Southwest Florida. According to Chase Hussey, the owner of Paradise Parasailing on Fort Myers Beach, the weather has been unusual and disappointing for visitors who were hoping for sunny conditions. Hussey's business, along with others on Estero Island, relies on good weather to operate, but this winter has been rough with only a few days of sun and heat.

The recent weather in southwest Cape Coral has been particularly severe, with flash flooding caused by several inches of rain falling in a short period of time. The flooding was so severe that it swamped cars in the middle of the road. While the weather can be managed, it is a challenge for businesses that rely on good conditions to operate. Despite the disappointing weather, visitors are still enjoying themselves, according to Hussey.

Overall, El Niño is the cause of the rainy winter in Southwest Florida, and it has been a challenging season for businesses that rely on good weather. While the weather can be managed, it is a reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of being prepared for [+]

Rolex 24 At Daytona Wasn't Always Rolex And Wasn't Always 24; SunBank?

The Rolex 24 At Daytona, one of the most prestigious endurance races in the world, has undergone several name changes and distance modifications since its debut in 1962. In 1972, due to an international rules change on engines, the race was dramatically shortened, and won by Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx.

In 1992, the race became known as the Rolex 24 At Daytona, and the distance was increased to 24 hours. Since then, the race has been held annually, with various drivers and teams competing for the coveted victory. The Rolex 24 At Daytona [+]
