Desantis Files Last-minute Request To Dismiss

In a last-minute move, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has filed a request to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a group of betting companies known as West Flagler and Associates. The lawsuit aims to stop the Seminole Tribe's mobile sports betting app and the planned relaunch of in-person craps, roulette, and sports betting at all South Florida casinos. The request was filed three weeks after the Seminole Tribe relaunched its mobile sports betting app and days before the planned relaunch of in-person gambling.

According to the governor's response, the plaintiffs waited too long to file their lawsuit, which strips their cause of urgency. The governor argues that the tribe's 2021 gaming compact with the state, which gave the tribe a monopoly on sports betting, is valid and cannot be challenged. The governor's lawyers, led by Attorney General Ashley Moody, argue that the plaintiffs offer no good explanation for their delay in filing the lawsuit.

The late-night court filing came three weeks after the Seminole Tribe relaunched its mobile sports betting app and days before the planned relaunch of in-person craps, roulette and sports betting at all South Florida casinos on Thursday. No legal obstacles appear to stand in the way.
