The St. Lucie County Sheriff 's Office has identified a person of interest in connection to the mass shooting.

On Monday, Hester told reporters after the shooting, "It was mass chaos, as you can imagine, when shots rang out. There were a thousand plus people here at the event, and as the shots rang out, people were just running in all directions.''

A Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at a Florida park descended into chaos on Monday evening after a mass shooting left eight people injured, one critically.

The shooting erupted around 5:20 p.m. even as the MLK Car Show and Family Fun Day was progressing at Ilous Ellis Park.

Record number of manatees visit Blue Spring State Park during Florida cold snap

A record number of manatees gathered Tuesday at Blue Spring State Park during Florida's latest cold snap.

Temperatures in Central Florida dipped into the 30s during the cold stretch, driving the manatees to the warm waters at the spring.

The previous record was set on Jan. 29, 2021, when 721 manatees visited Blue Spring State Park in Volusia County.

Cuban migrants 'very desperate' to make it to U.S.

The surge in migrants crossing the southern border from Mexico into the U.S. has garnered a lot of attention, but the U.S. Coast Guard says the number trying to enter illegally by sea is increasing as well. 

In the last three months, the Coast Guard picked up nearly 5,000 Cubans trying to enter the U.S. illegally by sea. That's close to the nearly 6,200 migrants encountered in the previous 12 months.

Roots on the ground: Ormond Beach celebrates Florida Arbor Day | Ormond Beach Observer

Florida Arbor Day, celebrated on the third Friday of January every year since 1886, encourages and promotes the planting of new trees.

"And I hope trees are planted every day, because trees are just a wonderful, wonderful thing," she said. 

The new tree was donated by Yellowstone Landscape.

Schools tasked with creating catch-up programmes for unplaced learners | Randfontein Herald

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has commissioned principals at schools to develop catch-up programmes to accommodate learners who were unplaced during the start of the 2023 academic year.

This comes after scores of learners in different parts of the region were left without schools, when schools reopened their doors on January 11.

Volusia County Council to discuss cost of beach driving tolls for residents in March | Ormond ...

Is it time for Volusia County to revisit how much visitors pay to access its beaches? Should residents be able to drive on the beach for free, or at least at a reduced cost? At least two members on the County Council think so.

The County Council will discuss the costs for beach access at its meeting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, a result of District 4 Council man Troy Kent making a motion during his closing comments at the council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
