Travel in Florida comes to a near halt as Ian makes landfall. Here’s what to know

Hundreds of flights have been canceled , theme parks closed their gates, ports shut down and several cruises are canceled , as Floridians braced for Hurricane Ian after it made landfall around Fort Myers on Wednesday.

With South Florida outside the cone of concern, Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport remain open but are experiencing hundreds of flight cancellations.

Multiple Florida airports close, airlines issue travel waivers in preparation for Hurricane Ian

As Hurricane Ian approaches Florida's Sarasota County, some Florida airports have announced closures, and airlines are offering travel waivers for those impacted.

Many travelers have already had their plans disrupted. Nearly 2,000 U.S. flights slated for Wednesday have been canceled, according to flight-tracking site Flightaware.com, with the highest cancellations at Florida airports.

Hurricane Ian Makes Landfall As a Category 4 Storm This Is What Travelers Need to Know

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida Wednesday afternoon bringing winds of up to 155 mph and dangerous water levels to the area.

In addition to airlines, Disney has closed its Orlando resort, "Walt Disney World Resort theme parks, and water parks will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29," a spokesperson confirmed to Travel + Leisure on Tuesday.

Florida Gators First Travel Roster Under Billy Napier - Sports Illustrated Florida Gators News, ...

Florida's first 70-man travel roster has been revealed ahead of UF's first road matchup of the 2022 season and Billy Napier era, with the No. 20 Gators (2-1) taking on the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers (3-1) in Knoxville, Tenn. on Saturday.

Compiling the inaugural travel roster was a tough task for Napier this week, although in line with his noted depth concerns for the Gators this season, he envisions the challenge becoming more imposing in future seasons.

Florida football schedule 2023: Gators travel to Utah for opener

UF's home opener will be the following week Sept. 9 against McNeese State, with its SEC opener the ensuing week Sept. 16 against Tennessee.

Florida's SEC schedule will include its six division opponents, a trip to cross-division rival LSU (Nov. 11) and a home game against another west division opponent, Arkansas, on Nov. 4.
