Miami Beach hosts American Black Film Festival, opening with Crump documentary

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Florida-based civil rights attorney Ben Crump, best known for taking on high-profile cases, like representing the families of Trayvon Martin and George Floyd, is now the focus of a new Netflix documentary.

The documentary, "Civil," premieres on Juneteenth at the ABFF. Juneteenth commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when Federal troops took control of the state of Texas, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law in 1863.

Wilton Manors ready to celebrate Stonewall Pride Festival - CBS Miami

Migration to the U.S. on the rise, Juneteenth Food and Wine Festival, Miss Florida | WLRN

Thousands of people from different countries in Latin America are making a 1,200-mile trek to the U.S. border.

Black southerners have been celebrating Juneteenth for decades. But it only became an official federal holiday last year.

It's a day to commemorate the day emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South — when a Union general arrived at the Southeast coast of Texas to finally share the news that they had been freed. That was on June 19, 1865.
