Cigars, Pipes Could Get Carve-Out In New Florida Bill – CBS Miami

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) – A bill that would allow local governments to restrict smoking at beaches and public parks could be changed to exclude cigars and pipes.

The Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee are expected to consider the bill (SB 224) and the proposed amendment during a meeting Monday. Under current law, the state controls the regulation of smoking throughout Florida.

Florida bill would ban protests similar to demonstrations outside Laundrie’s North Port home

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Two Florida lawmakers have proposed a bill to prevent protests outside of homes similar to the demonstrations that raged on for months at the family home of Brian Laundrie.

The proposed law, sponsored by state Sen. Keith Perry (R-Gainesville) and Sen. Jim Boyd (R-Bradenton), would make picketing outside of someone's home a second-degree misdemeanor.

'A Mandate for Musical Chairs': Florida Bill Would Require Colleges to Change Accreditors

In practice, though, requiring colleges to change accreditors would create an enormous bureaucratic burden for the colleges, take up to 2 years of time for college staff, and cost tens of thousands of dollars for each institution.

"They can't just automatically go to another accreditor. It's not like just going from Kroger's to Publix when you can't find something you want," said Belle S. Wheelan, president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Colleges.

Legislative session sees voter reform frustration

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida lawmakers aren't slowing down as they wrap up the fourth week of the legislative session.

Florida's mobile sports betting program was put on hold last year after a federal judge ruled against the new Seminole gaming compact. Many bet a ballot initiative would change things, but the effort went bust.

Florida legislators set on erasing the state's distressing racist legacy | Fred Grimm - South

I read the book twice. Still remember the pen-and-ink illustrations of the flintlock-armed adventurer in pursuit of villainous savages back in the late 1700s, when mountainous West Virginia was still the untamed, westernmost portion of Virginia.

But Lew's fans (who apparently include latter-day white supremacists) need not worry that modern-day students might be exposed to a less-heroic version.
