A New Alimony Law Makes Florida Even Less Safe for Women - Ms. Magazine

A New Alimony Law Makes Florida Even Less Safe for Women - Ms. Magazine

Buried in  the new law  is a provision mandating that courts end or reduce alimony if the recipient is found to be  or have been  in a "supportive relationship" with someone outside their family in the last year.

Reasonable concerns  have been raised about the vagueness of the term "supportive relationship," but more alarming is the way this provision invites ex-spouses to surveil their former partners and control their choices. This is a law meant to limit women's autonomy.

Florida Manatee Bay recorded hottest seawater over 100 degrees - CSMonitor.com

Florida recorded perhaps the hottest seawater ever measured. Manatee Bay recorded an unofficial 101.1 degrees Monday evening and nearby scientists saw devastating effects from prolonged hot water surrounding Florida, such as coral bleaching.

The water temperature on the tip of Florida hit hot tub levels, exceeding 100 degrees two days in a row. And meteorologists say that could potentially be the hottest seawater ever measured, although there are some issues with the reading.

Florida ocean temperatures top 100 degrees as coral bleaching is found | CNN

Experts now say they expect "complete mortality" of the bleached reefs in just a week, and worry reefs at greater depths could face the same fate if the unprecedented ocean warmth continues to escalate.

Extreme heat and a lack of rain and wind pushed water temperatures around Florida to some of the highest levels ever observed anywhere. A buoy in the Florida Bay hit 101.1 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of 5 feet Monday, in an area where coral is scant.
